NEW IDEAS FOR PAINTER'S TAPE

There are not enough rolls of painter’s tape to keep my floors and baseboards free from paint splatters. Although I am meticulous and organized in my work life, I take shortcuts with DIY projects and my morning routine in my closet.

My husband and daughter were the only ones who were not surprised. In my defense, I think we let go of some of our OCD tendencies in front of the ones we love. It is funny that I love using painter’s tape for purposes other than protecting baseboards or hardwood floors.

So, if you have a roll of blue (or green) painter’s tape, keep it handy in your junk drawer or tool bucket.

Painter’s tape is like a sticky note with more adhesive on the opposite side.

SUPPLIES

The best part of this tip is that you only need two supplies- painter’s tape and a Sharpie.

Unless you are painting your entire house, you do not need more than one roll for these painter’s tape tips!

Most of us have a roll of the familiar blue or green tape—we just need to remember where we stored it.

IDEAS FOR PAINTER’S TAPE

1. Paint touch-up reminders. I walk past our front door 30 times a day, and every day, I make a note to touch up the scuff marks.

Painter’s tape is like a sticky, a reminder of what walls and baseboards need a touch-up.

2. Outlet placements. If you moved into a home and are scratching your head why the previous owners had the coffee pot on the opposite side of the kitchen, or like us, we want to add a floor outlet.

If you plan to remodel or remove a wall, make sure to plan where you want electrical outlets. Blue tape is great because you can move it as you tweak your remodel plans.

3. Furniture placement. This is a favorite of mine because it provides a visual of how much space you have between an oversized couch and a side table. You can read more about furniture placement.

4. Organize wire hangers. Over the years, my husband amassed a wire hanger collection that would have sent Joan Crawford over the edge.

Blue tape was the best way to corral the hangers before returning to the cleaners. I sorted them in counts of a dozen hangers and taped them to keep them “tight.”

5. Flag the Home’s utilities, etc.

Add blue tape to the sprinkler box, water shut-off valve, utilities, and router. I have additional notes for my wifi and router when my printer is down.

6. Framed Wall Prints and Photos If you want to avoid a dozen holes in your wall while you eyeball where to hang photos and prints, painter’s tape will save your drywall.

7. Label Donations I use a wide strip of blue tape and label the contents. It calms me before I drop off a bag of clothes.

8. Property Lines I ask my sellers to locate these stakes ( with the help of a county-issued plat map) before listing their homes.

For most of us, our properties are well defined, but if you live on acreage or have an abundance of pine trees and scrub oak, flag your stakes with blue tape. You may only be able to “flag” the top of the buried stake, but the tape makes it easier to locate.

9. Hopscotch—Next time you have a BBQ or potluck, add a hopscotch. It’s not just for kids! When was the last time you played hopscotch?
