HOW TO REMOVE CARPET SMELL
We need new carpet. If we used one of those CSI-like LED lights, our carpets would glow like a Christmas tree.
And the only thing worse than knowing there are twenty years of dog DNA in the carpet is the smell of the evidence.
I tried commercial-grade cleaners, a carpet cleaner, and all the pet-related cleaning products with big dogs on the label. But nothing removed the carpet smell.
When it rains, it is as if the humidity activates odors from the carpet fibers and the rug pad underneath.
We experienced an unusually high amount of rain earlier this month, and for some reason, the rain or humidity activated the carpet smell to a level 5.
QUESTION: Why does the rain bring out the odors?
Until now… because I found a solution to remove the carpet smell. It is simple and you only need to cupplies (likely under your sink).

CLEANING STAPLES
- Dawn Dish soap
- Vinegar
That’s it! With equal parts Dawn dish soap and vinegar, I poured it into an empty spray bottle.
I topped it off with a little extra vinegar so the nozzle would not get clogged with the familiar blue dish soap.
If this winning cleaning combo sounds familiar, it is because I use both of these cleaning products.
dISH SOAP + VINEGAR
- This rug pad residue was a sticky mess
- Diamond rings sparkle
- Wicker baskets
STEPS TO REMOVE CARPET SMELL
With a spray bottle and equal parts of Dawn dish soap and vinegar, I tested it on the carpet in our loft.
On the first pass, I just sprayed( more like a spritz).
Hours later, I repeated this step with a rag to work it into the carpet fibers.
I sprayed the solution on the carpet in sections.
I was not worried about discoloration, but if you have a wool rug, I suggest you test a small section.
I had nothing to lose except the gag-inducing response on my stairs and bedrooms.
New carpet is not in the budget, so I am highly motivated to figure out a solution to keep the house smelling like a kennel.
Over twenty years and four dogs ( and our grandpup, Russell).
However, after spraying the carpet in sections, I could detect a noticeable difference. Unlike the other products I tried, the odor did not return.

Do I have any volunteers who would be willing to test this solution on their carpet? The older the carpet, the better, especially if you have cats or dogs.

Oh, and if you want to entertain your kids, grandkids, or family members, I bought one of these LED black lights years ago. My kids were entertained for hours watching the light glow on faucets, toothbrushes, toilets and door knobs. Ewww.
It’s truly the best mixture ever! You know I’m having a hard time finding the small $.99 bottles of Dawn anymore. They’re adding so much things to them like Power Dawn, etc, lol, when I just want the little old-school bottle, lol I truly believe vinegar is one of the best inventions ever for cleaning! And your grandpup is a Doll!
