REMINDERS BEFORE YOU MOVE
As a real estate professional, I love to share tips with buyers and sellers. But this tip is for anyone who moves from one address to another. Here are a few reminders before you move.
This includes:
- buyers
- sellers
- rentals
- dorm residences
- college rentals
- adulting kids living in their parent’s basement waiting for a home
Any guesses what the #1 thing buyers, sellers, and renters forget to do when they make a move?
Queue the Jeopardy music.
Update the delivery address in your Amazon account before you move.
I don’t about you, but when I am on Amazon I am on auto-pilot!
At one point, I had my three kids’ college addresses in my Amazon account. Occasionally I would send them items I thought they might need in their dorm room or rental.
Unfortunately, I recently ordered a set of black photo frames and they went to my son’s previous apartment. address (in St. Paul ( the city). from three years ago.
That was a painful reminder (and a future tip). Here are a few address change notification reminders before you make a move.
ONLINE RETAILERS
Add your new ship to the address and delete the previous address.
I am always surprised when I list a vacant home and the mailbox is filled with deliveries from the previous owner/tenants.
LAWN CARE SERVICES
We have a seasonal lawn care provider. Make sure to them that you are either discontinuing service or updating the service address. Often, the new owners will continue the service, but you need to remove your name (and credit card) from the account.
CLEAN OUT GARAGE, CRAWL SPACE AND ATTIC
Sellers are surprised by the logistics of getting rid of personal belongings relegated to the attic, crawl space, or garage. Donation sites limit what they will accept so make a plan to hire a junk pickup or donation site.
That is how I ended up with my seller’s garden box.
Do not assume that the new owners would love your cassette tape collection in your crawl space.

Here are a few more reminders before you make a change of address:
UTILITIES
Call your utilities and change the billing address and account name to your new address. If you are selling your home both buyers and sellers need to confirm the account change. This can all be done online with your water and utilities providers.

Good reminders! When I was in my early twenties, I forgot to pack the bathroom drawer with a lot of expensive cosmetics! I cried over that one. I do better now — I pack those first!
As a retired military family then overseas business person, I can add an AMEN to changing those addresses. Ironically, it help my son when he needed former addresses for a security application connected to his job one. I’m going go delete those extra address right now! My husband just started a spread sheet for all our address more for a memory but on occasion, we need them.
