THE BEST TIP WHEN RAIN IS IN THE FORECAST

Raise your hand if you start the week by checking the weather app? I plan my schedule around the forecast. But now I look at the forecast for a great tip that works for anyone who owns 50-gallon trash cans .

TRASH CAN TIP

Our trash cans hold things you cannot unsee. Kitchen-size bags split and egg yolks ooze from the empty oatmeal container used to hold them. Some weeks the cans smell like the trash receptacle at the dog park. You know that smell when you walk into your garage and somebody tossed something into the trash and trash pickup isn’t for another four days.

If you are a follower at Everyday Edits you remember this observation about my college son’s trashcan!

TIP TO CLEAN THE TRASH BINS

We live in Colorado which means we have summer water restrictions. I also set my own restrictions by not running the tap while brushing my teeth and dumping 1/2 full water glass in plants.

With all the rain in Colorado this summer I decided to use the overcast skies and buckets of afternoon rain.

CHECK OUT THE FORECAST TO CLEAN THE TRASHCANS

It is hard to justify filling two 64-gallon trash cans with soap and water to clean the trash can gunk. This trash can tip requires a forecast for rain.

TRASH CAN TIP

So when the forecast calls for rain I make plans! Last week we had five days of rainy afternoons and as many inches of rainwater. As soon as the garbage collectors grabbed our weekly trash I got to work!

GARBAGE CAN TIP

As soon as the trash crew came by it was game day!

STEPS

  • Haul the trash cans next to the garage making sure they are not protected under an overhang or gutter.
  • Clean any debris that remains from the bottom of the bins.
  • Keep the lids open (obviously)
  • Add vinegar or bleach (I used vinegar.
  • Let the rain fill up the bins
  • Revisit the bins and slosh the water around the trashcans

Suggestions:

  • Do not wear work or nice leisurewear.
  • Wear gloves if you just had a manicure or get grossed out by the yucky stuff at the bottom of trans bins
  • Ideally, you have a forecast of showers and not sprinkles. The more rain the higher the fill line.

Oh my gosh, you guys dumping out the dirty water from the two identical bins was such a feeling of accomplishment. It’s like a fresh start for every season. I have done something similar during fall and spring sloppy snow days.

It’s the little things that bring most of us joy, right? To celebrate the rain and clean the trash cans. I told a few neighbors and their responses gave me the idea to share this.

My cans are now ready for popsicles and push pops and melted ice cream cones and melted smores.

Oh before you go here is a popular tip for patio cushions before the rain!
