THRIFTY IDEAS FOR BLANK WALLS

When I get in a decor rut or bored by my walls I remind myself Caroline Ingalls had bigger challenges on the prairie. The Ingalls family lived in a log cabin where rot was more top of mind than prairie theme wall decor.

Caroline Ingalls lived with nothing on her walls because log cabins did not have the option to upgrade to drywall.

Sidenote: Did you know the introduction of drywall in 1916 changed the process of home construction?

Caroline Ingalls did the best she could in the mid-1870s with a 12×12 space . This craft was inspired by Pa Ingalls. So when you get frustrated by a wall that stretches across a living room or an empty staircase remember Caroline Ingalls.

It will happen. The walls are okay. Maybe they just need paint.

When I preview new construction I get pulled into those pristine l finished walls. And then when I show a 1987 vacant home I see where the previous owners arranged all of their photos, framed college degrees, swim team ribbons, and a dozen other holes and pencil marks. in every room.

I love a blank wall … for a minute. But then I need to add something to that space because our homes tell our stories. Let’s have fun with stories. My home’s story is all about clocks and my family.

IDEAS FOR BLANK WALLS

FAMILY PHOTOS

In moderation, family photos are amazing. One of our close friends has four children between them. In their entry, there are four framed photos arranged in a square in their entryway.

When I am at their house (usually in a Halloween costume) I admire the framed set of photos. It is subtle. The framed photos arranged on the wall is an understated way to introduce their four children to new friends and guests.

MIRRORS

I love mirrors placed in the opposite direction from a window. The light is magnified! The room sparkles with the mirrored glass.

Based on a few hair-raising showings I am not a fan of a mirror that is opposite an entry door. Let’s just say I thought a mountain lion ( it was a statue) was over my right shoulder. I screamed and almost took out my buyer in the entry.

It is a heart-pounding feeling when you see a person (yourself) standing in front of you. Of course, I get a similar reaction when I catch my face in the mirror with bathroom lighting.

INEXPENSIVE WALL PRINTS

Over the years I have shared a few ideas for wall prints, but these prints were an inexpensive way to add a little character to a powder bath or kitchen nook.

CROWN MOULDING

(or is it molding)?”

We added crown molding to my office a few years ago and love it. It dresses up any room or wall.

Crown molding is at Home Depot with varying styles and widths to choose from. In my opinion, it is one of the best ways to add depth and character to a blank wall without dipping into your home equity line of credit.

NARROW WALL

If you have a narrow wall in a kitchen, or bathroom here is a fun way to add a little inspiration. love to search for square black and white greeting cards when I travel.

CANVAS PRINTS

I was not a fan of canvas prints until my kids were in college or living in their first rental. I added a variety of wall prints to update this high school to college bedroom.

Homegoods has some canvas prints. Just Google “canvas prints” and 14,000 options will pop up on your screen.

CLOCKS

I love oversized clocks! If you are a regular at Everyday Edits you know I love large clocks above fireplaces and on blank walls. When I painted my home office Hale Navy I moved this oversized wood clock because I loved the wood grain against the blue walls.
