NEW USES FOR KITCHEN BAKEWARE
I grew up with a mom who repurposed y egg cartons and cottage cheese containers.
Her dad was a sales rep for a hardware chain, and, as the story goes, my grandpa was a colleague of the Walton family. f only. If only!
My mom’s mindset continues to be one of repurposing before disposing of everyday items. Clutter makes my dad pace. He used to combine the different cereal brands into one box. Who mixes Fruity Pebbles with Lucky Charms?
This is the context for my curiosity to find new uses for kitchen bakeware!
You can imagine how painful it is when we load the car with Goodwill donations.
My husband loads the car before I have a chance to review, reminisce, or, his biggest worry, haul stuff out of the back of his car and back to the garage.
Like the Pampered Chef cast-iron griddle. My )first) husband was this close to sneaking it into his car when I took a second look at the rectangular cast-iron griddle with metal handles on opposite ends. It looks vintage (it looks like I used it).
I saw it as a kitchen staple with great bones. I could not let it go just yet.
The handles were sturdy, and the tray had a a depth of 3/4 inch. This kept the water contained, avoiding leaks in the windowsill or on my Marshall’s cabinet.
This winter with no snow in Colorado I found myself leaning into plants. My son gave me a plant for Christmas, and I loved the pop of green in the kitchen by the window.
I routinely send my son proof-of-life photos of the plant because he knows I kill things, like my sourdough starter.
So on a whim, I added a few starter herbs and plants to the bakeware.
The handles made it easy to move around during the winter months when the sun was in high demand.
Whereas my husband saw a cast-iron griddle headed to Goodwill, I saw a cast-iron griddle that was destined for a window ledge with herbs and flowers.
