HOW TO KEEP LETTUCE FRESH
I eat lettuce straight out of the plastic container or bag to get my daily produce (or to make up for the 1/2 dozen chocolate chip cookies I ate the day before). So, I found out how to keep lettuce fresh a bit longer.
Either way, I typically buy mixed greens at Costco because I love lettuce with a turkey sandwich or a wedge of cheese. I try to add veggies and fruits to most meals, most days.
Field greens are a food penance for my chocolate cravings.
Lettuce is great until it develops a bitter taste that no amount of vinaigrette can mask. I tried. And my middle son was on to me when I tried to disguise the slightly wilted mixed greens with walnuts.

Like me, he loves desserts but balances it out with produce, greens, and his new favorite workout- rock climbing.
STEPS TO TO KEEP LETTUCE FRESH
The only thing you need for this tip is a paper towel.
- Take a full-size paper towel.
- Place the paper towel on top of the lettuce inside the original packaging, plasticware or bag.
3. Flip the container or bag upside down. The paper towel should now be on the bottom with the lettuce or field greens on top.
The paper towel is in place to absorb the excess water and moisture.
The moisture from the lettuce accelerates the aging process with the familiar bitter taste.
I bought a new container of chopped salad and spinach leaves to test this tip. My motto s trust but verify. That is my dad’s lifelong tip.
The lettuce tasted great and it extended its shelf life for a few extra days. With the price of produce, we can all use some food storage tips to extend the life of our produce!
