I am a bit of a dish fanatic. The first time I said that to someone in the aisles of Homegoods, she giggled, leaned in, and said, “Me too.”
I love salad-sized plates and appetizer plates for the holidays and seasons. But I am thrifty so I like to find deals to save money on dishes and still have fun with tablescapes.
.Over the last few years, I have found a few tips to save money on dishes and tabletops.
SETS TO SAVE MONEY ON PLATES
- Shop clearance, Goodwill and a Dollar Store for seasonal plates
- Goodwill has year-round dishware for us dish hoarders!
- Tuesday Morning
- Shop estate and garage sales for glass and holiday theme plates and dishes.
- Shop the clearance tab at your favorite online stores.
- I found my glass plates here
- Stock up on oil-based Sharpies
- Spray paint
- Tracing templates
With a small stack of glass plates I freehanded a few plates with hearts.
PLATES OR PLATTERS
These appetizer appetizer-size glass plates are Made in America. The glass makes them easy to clean if I make a mistake or sneeze midway through spelling merry.
All you need is a stack of glass plates (salad or dinner size), mugs, bowls, and oil-based Sharpies.
Here is the tutorial on how to paint with oil-based Sharpies.
The best part is when the next holiday or season arrives, you can soak these plates in soapy water, and ta-da- you have a blank plate pallet!
I have a collection of spray paints for different seasons.
For a fun twist, spray or paint the back side of the glass plate (no food served on that side) and you have a navy plate for the summer red, white, and blue holidays.
The blue plate below is painted with Hale Navy leftover from these paint projects.
If using oil-based markers here is the tutorial for the design to “set.”
