EASIEST WAY TO PAINT HOUSE NUMBERS
We heard the truck idling outside our house. Not a big deal except our two Berners go bark arse crazy when they hear the blue shuttle-size van turn the corner onto our street. Chloe and Elliott would not notice Santa’s reindeer showing up in our driveway.
But when the Amazon van makes an eighteen-second drop-off and you would think we had these bears at the front door.
We don’t have house numbers painted on our sidewalk and this spring we noticed the black etched address house numbers were really faded. That might explain our neighbor’s packages on our front porch.
Sidenote: I have no before images of our house numbers.

.
I had just painted these planters to match the wrought iron spindles we installed years ago. When I suggested to my detail-oriented husband I could paint the numbers with a kid’s craft brush it was hard to ignore my husband’s face.
We all make that face.
You see I have a history with spatulas and paintbrushes and loose paint can lids.

I mentioned I had an oil-based Sharpie with a fine to medium tip point from this fun craft project. And he leaned in for the details.

EASIEST WAY TO PAINT HOUSE NUMBERS
Our numbers are etched into the stone, but an oil-based Sharpie also works for faded wood or metal house numbers. The oil-based Sharpie gives you precision whereas a paintbrush might add a few paint splatters.

OIL-BASED SHARPIES
Home Depot used to carry the oil-based Sharpies, but they have not been on an endcap in months. I order my Sharpies on Amazon so I am not driving around looking for the popular primary ink colors.
STEPS
- Clean the surface in and around the numbers
- Double check you have an oil-based Sharpie and not a permanent marker.
- Oil-based markers work on metal, wood glass, plastic, and stone.
- The paint dries quickly so pick a time of day when the sun is not beating down on the house numbers.

This is an easy fix and now the home address numbers pop from the stone. You could add a stencil like this one to a metal mailbox.
