IS IT TIME TO CLEAN THE KITCHEN CABINETS?

My kitchen and pantry shelves take a direct hit during the holidays. But when I found powdered sugar in the vent below the cabinet that holds the dry ingredients, I knew it was time to clean the kitchen cabinets.

Do you know what I do when I grab a cabinet drawer pull? I make a mental note to wipe down the kitchen hardware.

And then I start to make dinner ( while unloading) the dishwasher, and forget to clean the sticky grime on the underside of the cabinet pull.

Sound familiar?

STEPS TO CLEAN THE KITCHEN CABINETS

It was time to clean the pantry and kitchen cabinets, which housed baking and cooking staples.

Let’s go!

This first step may be a bit of a hassle, but you’ll appreciate it when you’re done!

1. Empty the cabinets, pantry, and kitchen drawers.
2. Remove the shelf liner
3. CLEAN

This step sounds obvious. But don’t forget these steps:

• Remove the liners (wash the liners). love this shelf liner..
• I could not believe the dirt left on the counter when I rinsed the liners and placed them on the counter to dry. Eww.
• Clean the cabinet pulls and don’t forget the stove dials.
• Sort through the bags of flour, brown sugar, powdered sugar etc.
• I store my flour, sugars, and oats in glass containers.
• I bought these pantry labels for the jars. I love them.
• I found the glass jars at Walmart and Target.

• Over the last few holidays, my syrups, honey, and Karo syrup get pretty gunky. To clean the lids I boil water (yes I use my electric tea kettle a gift from my son) and then soak the lids in a bowl to dissolve the sticky lids.

EXPIRATION DATES

Recently, when I cleaned out the pantry, I found an unopened bottle of catsup with a 2017 expiration date. How did that happen? Eww,

Here is a refresher on expiration dates.

It was a dark brown, if you are wondering.

My family routinely checks the expiration dates on eye drops, cough medicine, and Tylenol.

SHELVES

With the contents of the shelves on the kitchen table and island, it is a good time to measure the height of your cabinet or pantry shelves. I survey my “tallest” staples for one shelf and then adjust the others.

Storage Containers

Over the years, I have tried lots of storage ideas. I love my glass jars, but I think the brown sugar dries out sooner in the jar. I recently shared this tip for brown sugar.

My favorite storage bins are the clear plastic bins you can find online, at Target, or Home Goods. I feel like my kitchen shelves and pantry are ready for spring.
