THE BEST TIP BEFORE OVER NIGHT GUESTS
I love to welcome overnight guests during the holidays and visits.
Here are a few idtips I borrowed from my friend Michelle, who is a super host for their cabin in the woods.
She runs their cabin like an Airbnb, and it makes a huge difference for guests.
Today I have a few reminders and tips to be your own super host before the holidays.
Make sure to read the last tip. I wish I had done it years ago!
TIPS BEFORE GUESTS ARRIVE
- SHORT ON CLOSET SPACE? ADD A BENCH. I have ornaments in one of my guest room closets and my daughter’s Homecoming and prom dresses in another closet. It is a process to transition to a guest room. In the interim, I added a bench. The bench allows guests to empty their overnight bags or “stage” their clothes. A bench makes a great piece to stack extra pillows or throws.
2. TEMPERATURE CONTROL COMFORT
Our guest room (daughter’s previous room) is freezing in the winter, so we included an oscillating heater just in case. A small fan is perfect for creating white noise and circulating the air.
I always include extra pillows and a comforter. Some of you may have seen this DIY for additional guest room bedding.

3. LIGHTING
Add lamps to nightstands. I added motion sensor lights just outside the guest room, in case someone needs a midnight snack. I leave additional lights on on the main level for the youngins who may roll in later.
Overhead light is good, but lamps soften the space with ambient lighting.
4. CODES & LOGIN: Make sure to include login credentials for guests. Also, provide gate and house codes and/or keys.

TEST RUN FOR GUESTS
Sleep in the guest room and use the guest shower before your houseguests arrive. It is the best way to anticipate and plan for overnight guests.
It has been five years since we remodeled our daughter’s bedroom. With our current bathroom remodel underway, I am using the guest bathroom and bedroom.
This is what I wish I had done before overnight guests:
- Sleep in the guest bed and test out the guest pillows.
- How long does it take for the guest shower to reach a comfortable temperature?
- Our guest room shower takes eight minutes to warm up, and it goes from freezing cold to scalding hot.
- Include a small bamboo shower bench. I found this bench on Amazon, but I think you can find them at HomeGoods. I would use it to place oversized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
- Or add the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash to the wall. I found these best-selling shampoo dispensers online.
- OTHER ITEMS TO CONSIDER
- Add glasses or water bottles for a quick glass of water
- Include a pop-up laundry basket for guests to toss their dirty clothes (they can then shove them into their suitcase when they leave).
- Add additional toilet paper rolls.
- Hair dryer, Tylenol, or allergy meds
- Extra Towels and a floor mat.

I have a little bag of ear plugs by the guest beds. I”m constantly tweaking the guest rooms and amenities as we have guests stay over.
Great tips Laura. We remodeled our guest bathroom a few years back. I love that it is a easy walk-in shower with no barrier. Roomy and efficient with cabinet storage too.
