THE WEEKEND EDIT + COLORADO AVALANCHE

June 25, 2022

Happy Saturday!

As I write the intro to The Weekend Edit we are hours away from the Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup finals against the Tampa Bay LIghting!Sadly, the Avs were not able to win this game and so we are back on the ice in Florida in a few days!

The last time the Avs won we lived outside Columbus, Ohio. I had three kids under the age of seven and I joined a gym because free childcare was included.

I showered at the gym for an entire summer. It was the most peaceful ten minutes of my day with no fighting, tears, threats or Matchbox cars racing on the bathroom tile expressway.

And I certainly did not have this on my brain…

Do you know what today is on the calendar?

Take a breath…

It is six months until Christmas. Now is the time to start hoarding butter for the holiday baking.

JUNE HOLIDAY TIP

Now is a good time to order garland if your garland looks like it was in a wind storm and landed in a Chewy box under 12 pounds of bright white and soft white lights.

I found my favorite online floral shop down in Lexington.

I love their florals and their pine needle garland and customer service.

I ordered these tulips from there too! They are so pretty and they are the same ones you see in home decor stores.

WEEKEND FINDS + RANDOM STUFF AT EVERYDAY EDITS

  1. I finished All the Light We Cannot See. Such a good book, but I wanted a different ending.
  2. Looking for 4th of July treats? Start here.
  3. This video of a doe giving birth to 2 fawns in Pat’s Colorado yard is the best video ever!
  4. Apparently, none of you have a problem with rug residue ;0)
  5. I loved the hummingbird suggestions from last week’s Weekend Edit.
  6. These are on clearance if you want the cutest gnome salt & pepper shakers.

THE WEEKEND EDIT +HUMMINGBIRD DRAMA

June 18, 2022

Happy Saturday! It is heating up here in Colorado. Our yard looks thirsty which has me up in the early hours watering and coaxing the grass to stay with us. But in bigger news, we have drama in our backward. Yep, hummingbird drama. Our hummingbird attendance numbers are down this year. It appears the hummingbirds do not like the beverage station set up in our backyard. I think one of my neighbors must have top-shelf nectar.

And then there are the squirrels who love a buffet.

The squirrels who love these diy cakes. .

ISidenote: f you want a fun project with kids or grandkids or your girlfriends the bird cakes are a fun project

But back to the birds. I need hummingbird feeder tips, please! I am worried they may write a review.

WEEKEND FINDS + RANDOM STUFF AT EVERYDAY EDITS

  1. I cannot get into the show Yellowjackets. Is it just me?
  2. Loving this Amazon dress for summer. I wear it all the time!

THE WEEKEND EDIT + DALLAS SUPERSTARS

June 11, 2022

It is a beautiful morning in Colorado with no humidity. After a few days with my youngest in Dallas, I was ready to return to “cooler” temps and Evan was ready for me to stop talking. Together, we survived navigating the highways and overpasses of Dallas (the overpasses feel like the luge event at the Winter Olympics.

Evan got a break from his mom’s defensive (cautious driving habits), when I met my blogging friend, Preppy Empty Nester, for lunch at Honor Bar. Is it just me or could we pass as sisters?

While waiting for Evan to pick me up (talk about role reversal) Katie-M recognized Mark Cuban shopping at the type of mile high-end stores where one could shell out more money than we owe on our mortgage.
Those stores!

Evan and I found the home of his great-grandparents and his grandfather.

We knocked on the door and explained Evan’s relationship to the previous owners who lived there in the early 1940’s before serving on General MacArthur’s staff in Japan during the post-war reconstruction.

The current owner was happy to let us take a few photos on the front yard.

And today.

Grandmother Mary would be thrilled that their home and neighborhood were beautifully maintained.

THE WEEKEND EDIT+ DIRECTIONS TO DALLAS

June 4, 2022

HAPPY FIRST SATURDAY OF JUNE!

Thank you for all your sweet comments about this news!

I fly down to Dallas on Sunday to get our youngest son set up before his summer internship.

Wish us luck navigating the Dallas highways.

Evan and I rarely argue, but when we do, it means the following two conditions apply:

  • one of us is driving
  • and one of us is lost

Sidenote: My friends and family think it is odd/funny that as a Realtor I am terrible at directions (even with my map apps). I have the same issue with following a recipe.

We found out Evan’s great-grandparents lived in Dallas in the early 1940s. We hope to have an address to get a selfie of Evan in the current owner’s front yard (well, maybe on the sidewalk).

THE WEEKEND EDIT MEMORIAL DAY + BIG NEWS

May 28, 2022

Happy Saturday and Memorial Day Weekend.

This weekend, with the recent horrific events (again) in Buffalo and Uvalde, can we build our communities with more grace for OUR country?

A country where most of us choose to create a life with meaning, kindness and decency.

Let me be the first to volunteer to assist Matthew McMcConaughey in his personal efforts to find common ground.

Trying to add a little levity, but by no means disrespect.

Humor is my defense mechanism.

In other news ..

you should have seen my face when our friend asked if we were excited for our daughter’s wedding? I must have looked like Elliott when the toast pops out of the toaster.

I looked at our friend. Richard, like what are you talking about and I realized …

engagements lead to marriage.

Our baby girl is getting married. This was her at auntie Tricia’s wedding.

ENGAGEMENT NEWS

Our daughter, Ashley, got engaged on a Sunday afternoon to an amazing young man named Daniel.

We affectionately refer to him as Dan 2.0 because our daughter’s uncle *my brother) Dan did not like the name old Dan.

This is what I shared on my Facebook page.

So this just happened…

5-ish 💕🌸 years ago Rod and I went to Ireland to celebrate paying off our SBA loan. We Facetime’d Ash and said you must meet a boy from Dublin ( the Irish accent).

Well, she did meet a boy from Dublin ..OHIO. It turns out he grew up 5 exits from his future bride. And years later after proms and college graduations, they met in Denver on a Sunday afternoon for coffee after she had canceled their first date like four times (because of audit season).

Ironically, her Uncle Dan (Dan 1.0) canceled his first date with his now-wife because of a racquetball tournament.

When Ashley finally had a free morning for coffee she texted this new boy.

He said yes.

What she didn’t know was that he was in Vail that weekend with college friends. He left Vail in the early morning, with fresh powder in his rearview mirror, to meet his now future bride.

I just love this story.

Do you know how I met my husband( Ashley’s dad)?

At a party, with a keg in the family room and a pizza box in a broken window in the kitchen.

I introduced myself and said my last name was beer spelled backward.

THE WEEKEND EDIT IS THAT SNOW?

May 21, 2022

Happy Saturday! Mother Nature played a belated fool’s joke on us yesterday. Snow! I posted it on my Stories. It is hard to complain because in Colorado we always need rain and snow. I hope this May snow helps our firefighters this summer. My dad sent me a dozen texts warning me of the snow and potential frost. So right now my tomato and zucchini plants are under makeshift tents.

Thankfully this tip keeps my patio cushion inserts dry.

THE WEEKEND EDIT GRATITUDE OR GRUMPIES?

May 14, 2022

Happy Saturday. It has been windy all week here in the Denver area. The wind makes me cranky. As I type this week’s Weekend Edit I am listening to the wind and just getting annoyed. Good thing I started a gratitude journal ten days ago. Journaling reminds me when I encouraged my (always) cranky (frustrated) middle child, when he was a toddler, to throw his grumpies out the window. Journaling is my attempt to focus on the gratitude and not my attitude (grumpiesadult version of focusing on the gratitude and not the grumpies.

I ordered a cute gratitude journal. It came with 3 pages of stickers and looks perfect for …a 6th grader. I think I need just a spiral notebook. Does anyone journal?

Despite the wind, I made it our local Goodwill last weekend.

Do you remember when I found this Pottery Barn knockoff tray last summer at Goodwill?

I went in with a purpose and came out with two storage bins, a picnic basket and a greenery arrangement. The stems were worth the Goodwill price. Stay tuned for a future post of those before and finds. But first …

WEEKEND THOUGHTS + FINDS

  • A friend got us these leashes and they changed Chloe and Elliott’s lives (and our backs).
  • Have you heard of a peanut butter cake?
  • Do you have a favorite candle at Bath & Body Works? I loveSunwashed Citrus. It smells like an Anthro candle. Share your fav scents in the comments!

THE WEEKEND EDIT – DANCE LIKE ELIZABETH

May 7, 2022

If you are thinking Elizabeth must be Laura’s daughter start here.

If you know Elizabeth, in the headlines, who(m) I am referring to, but you have not seen her dance moves start here. Turn up the volume.

DANCE LIKE ELIZABETH (HOLMES)

This week I turned off the noise.

I stopped scrolling on my phone.

Instead, I turned my phone into a mobile DJ.

Dancing is different than working out to music because I can throw in a ballet move with a hip hop sequence. This has the makings of a Progressive commercial.

And this week I danced to my Spotify playlists and rediscovered how fun it is to just dance.

Just like Lady Gaga told us. It will be okay.

And you know what happened? Dancing makes us feel good. It does amazing things for our minds.

Oh, and the reason I thought of Elizabeth? Her dance style, with the clenched jaw, was familiar.

I dance just like her. I think I play tennis with the same face.

If you are new to the Weekend Edit Welcome! In a sentence, I share endless content ideas for Progressive and a little bit of decor, tips, easy recipes and seasonal ideas. I have never met a sentence that could not use a few more words.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS + FINDS

  • Katie is out with her reading, watching, and listening list.
  • I start my day with this free newsletter. They had me at Morning Brew.
  • I ordered these sneakers. I am a classic sneaker girl. Size down 1/2 size.

THE WEEKEND EDIT +GARAGE SALE SHENANIGANS

April 30, 2022

Happy Saturday

As I type this week’s Weekend Edit am I sitting on my porch steps overseeing our garage sale. A lady who was interested in my glass jars asked me if I had them in black?

Let me check in the back. #snarkyseller

There is something about making $15 on a chair I paid $145 two years ago. I love it when I have a $2 dollar sticker on an unopened box of glasses from Homegoods and someone asks if I will take a dollar.

I should mention I bought my neighbor’s china for $20 and a set of glass bowls. They are hiding in my dining room hutch.

What are your stories bout garage sales?

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • This DIY fire bowl looks like a fun outdoor addition.
  • I am reading Where the Forest Meets the Stars for book club. I really like it, but I don’t think it is for everyone. I can’t wait to discuss at book club.

THE WEEKEND EDIT + THE PLASTIC BAG LADY

April 23, 2022

Hello Saturday and Happy Belated Earth Day.

I almost filed for divorce in the self-checkout at Kroger over my husband’s excessive use of plastic bags. It turns out I have a visceral reaction to rebagging items, like napkins, that are (already) encased in plastic.

Apparently, the love of my life has never purchased an item without a takeaway bag.

If I had one wish for earth day it would be no more plastic bags and these wishes.

how-to-decorate-the-house-for spring-everyday-edits

Sidenote: No political statements I just have a visceral reaction to plastic bags and rounded fonts.

In other news, my tennis partner and I won our USTA match.

My kids suggested I should pick up a racquet between October and April.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • Michael shared these margarita recipes you can try before Cinco de Mayo.
  • I ordered this cute beach coverup.

THE WEEKEND EDIT + WINE TASTING

April 16, 2022

Hello Saturday and Happy Easter.

Well if you missed last week’s Weekend Edit it was a bit of fun in Ohio for the Mother-Son Weekend. You can read the first two paragraphs here to get up to speed.

And if you are reading today’s Weekend Edit and thinking it sounds familiar well this is the wine tasting story (not the airport story).

Do you remember I mentioned how excited I was for the wine tasting when this announcement showed up in my inbox?

Well, imagine my surprise last Saturday (after the airport mixup) when I was all ready for the wine tasting. I had visions of wines (same image as last week) from different regions for the mother-son wine tasting. Maybe a charcuterie board?

So imagine my reaction when I opened the back door of the fraternity house and saw banquet tables with Franzia boxed wine. Sigh and smile because it was perfect!

I loved it! It is so college! Oh, you guys it was just the cutest thing to have these college boys purchasing the finest blends of Franzia Chards and White Zins.

And when I asked if they had a boxed wine of a Rose one of the pledges said, without skipping a beat, “Oh Mrs. Nuss, did you know White Zinfandel is the baby sister to the Rose?”

Guess what he is studying in college?

You guys I am not a wine snob. I love boxed wine. I bring one to most USTA matches. I love the labels and the packaging.

But the Franzia was such a throwback and I am guessing the cheapest. But when I heard the White Zin is the baby sister to the Rose I knew I had to share this story with you!

You know these are the stories we remember and not the ones where everything was perfect. Who wants to hear about someone’s perfect life.

We had a mother-son twinning contest! My girlfriend purchased these sweatshirts for our Cape Cod trip in August. So I packed these and ordered 2 bucket hats and shipped them to Evan’s house at school.

It was a great weekend.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS BEFORE EASTER

  • My friend Katie at Preppy Empty Nester shared this Easter trivia.
  • I borrowed this frozen drink recipe from my west coast friend, Juliet’s blog.
  • Maybe for next year.
  • I snagged this out of the mailbox on the way to the airport. It looks great with navy!

THE WEEKEND EDIT + MOM WHERE ARE YOU IN OHIO?

April 9, 2022

Happy Saturday. I am in Ohio this weekend for Mom’s Weekend at my youngest son’s fraternity. Considering the dad’s weekend included a keg and day-old pizza I am prepared for a blackberry seltzer, Ritz crackers and a can of Cheese Whiz.

So imagine my reaction when this showed up in my inbox earlier this week.

And then imagine my reaction when I was waiting outside the Cincinnati airport at passenger pickup and Evan was waiting for me at the Dayton airport (one hour away from each other).

You know these are the stories we remember and not the ones where everything went off without a hitch. Right?

I texted the entire family and we had a group chat back and forth while Evan made the drive down to Cincinnati. We grabbed dinner at a fun place in Dayton called Old Scratch Pizza.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • My sister ordered these pillow covers to donate to a silent auction.
  • I am reading (listening) to Midnight Library for book club.
  • In surprising news, I am enjoying The Thing About Pam. It reminds me of Fargo (the original).

THE WEEKEND EDIT + MY VISCERAL REACTION TO THIS

April 2, 2022

HAPPY SATURDAY!

Happy Saturday. I almost said Monday! This real estate market frustrates me. My buyers can barely get into a home before the sellers accept an offer. I just want my buyers to feel like their showing matters. #realtorlife

So after a morning of showings, ranting to my husband about my visceral reaction to a television trend was just a typical Friday night.

My family is used to my visceral reactions to things (like rounded fonts).

MY VISCERAL REACTION TO THIS (and rounded fonts).

Here is my rant:

When did going to the bathroom become a standard scene in almost every series? Really? Like we as the audience don’t have the capacity to guess/assume/surmise (my new word) what is taking place behind the bathroom door in every Netflix or Hulu show?

In fact, in all my years of a real estate broker and blogger, I have only captured one photo of a toilet.

It was in my house and it was one of my first blog posts.

I found this sticker on Etsy and just had to get it for my boys’ bathroom for Halloween. Let’s just say they had zero reaction.

Hopping off my seat.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • Now, who watched the Oscars?
  • I am reading 1000 White Women. We did not learn about this deal in history class.
  • Is there such a thing as too much peanut butter? Check out this recipe.
  • This coconut cake recipe is perfect for Easterand in amazing news I made it!

THE WEEKEND EDIT +IT’S BEEN 26 DAYS

March 26, 2022

HAPPY SATURDAY!

Is it springin’ up where you live?

We have clear skies and warm temps this weekend. I plan to get outside and survey the brown grass and mulch. What projects do you have on your list?

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

So in amazing news, it has been 26 days since I began a self-imposed spending hiatus.

  • Okay, full disclosure- I had to buy these fur lined ankle boots from Jack Rogers for next fall.
  • Oh and I did buy these flats from this addictive site. Think TJMaxx delivered to your door.
  • Any guesses the #1state with the most inbound moves? The answer is here. Guess before you click.
  • In honor of Steve Wilhite, the inventor of the GIF file, I am sharing my favorite GIF (pronounced like the peanut butter brand JIF). My sister says this was me at the same age. I still make this face.
  • In faux flowers news- If you want higher end fake tulips check out these guys in Kentucky. I have ordered tulips, floral picks, pine needle stems and garland. It is great quality (sells out quickly, but inventory restocks often). They have this check out cart that shows you what people in your state are ordering. It is quite effective ;0) So, let’s get to it.

THE WEEKEND EDIT +WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THIS ROOM

March 19, 2022

HAPPY SATURDAY!

This time of year between snow and sun I like to get organized. To hold myself accountable, I am on a self-imposed … spending hiatus.

To appreciate the task to get organized you have to check out what is behind this lower level (basement) barn door. This grainy photo should give you a clue. Or, if you are an auditory learner just queue the creepy music in every scary, PG Halloween movie.

My goal is to organize these boxes into holidays, crafts, seasons and the what was I thinking pile? Please tell me you have a room or a closet that resembles this chaos.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • I know what you are thinking.. that’s a lot of Crate & Barrel boxes.
  • At some point I created a label for a bin dedicated to chips.
  • I bought these clear bins at Target to help me sort thru this mess (and see) the contents.
  • I uploaded this new video to my Youtube channel. I would love if you subscribed!
  • It is an update to this post about saggy couch (back) cushions.
  • I returned these pink bufallo check pillow cases. The fabric was similar to the metal folding chairs in the 70’s.
  • As soon as I opened the Amazon bag, I thought I must let everyone know: do not buy these pillows!
  • I updated the graphic of these pillows at the bottom of this post. ;0)
  • I ordered a few of these pillow cases on Etsy (recommended from my Dallas friend Katie.
  • I bought this for my garage entry door makeover that I shared last week.
  • That’s it. Spending hiatus in effect!
  • Moving along! And now I have a really fun craft idea for all of those vases under your sink.

JCREW FACTORY + TARGET FOR SPRING!

That little potted plant below is a favorite. It is over in the Magnolia houseware section at Target. I bought three and went back and bought two more. They are petite and look great in a guest bathroom or on a desk. The link below will take you to the Target page. And I have my eye on that bucket hat, but I don’t want to look like Gilligan’s sister. Plus, I am on a spending break this month.

THE WEEKEND EDIT + LIES LIES LIES YEAH

March 12, 2022

HAPPY SATURDAY!

Did you catch the Thompson Twin reference in the headline?

What happened to them and are they really twins?

So there were 1 1/2 lies in last week’s Weekend Edit.

My sister caught it and had a funny comment. I think it’s funny that no one guessed the lie.

Before I reveal it you can reread the original list:

10 TRUTHS AND A LIE LIST

  1. I lived in a trailer my first year of life.
  2. My maiden name is an alcoholic beverage spelled backwards.
  3. I cannot tread water.
  4. I was introduced to my husband by his ex-girlfriend.
  5. My dad was in the seminary to study to be a priest.
  6. I auditioned to be an Oscar Mayer hotdog mascot in college.
  7. My husband and I separated on before our one year anniversary.
  8. My first car accident was with a rabbi.
  9. I have a re-ocurring nightmare that I am short 3 college credit hours of Spanish.
  10. On more than one occassion I blamed the missing brownies/cookies on our dog(s).
  11. I told a white lie so my younger son could be in his brother’s confirmation class.

Disclosure: We are an open book with our adulting kids. We are open about all of the struggles and successes. They have heard all of the truths and probably a few more lies. ;0)

Some of you know me better than others, but we often get an idea of one’s personality through their words, written or spoken. Do you agree?

Most of my friends tell me I write the blog (not residential property contracts) the way I talk.

So basically I am a squirrel with verbal skills.

I love all comments so thank you.

Because like my mother-n law used to say, … she did not care if people were talking about her behind her back, she was just thrilled to be trending. #bestmotherinlawever

Total aside: but that chair is very similar to these chairs.

THE LIE:

I did not try out to be an Oscar Mayer hotdog mascot in college. No one thought this was a lie. It just makes me giggle when I reread that sentence.

If you have watched my Youtube videos you might think that explains shy she why she auditioned to be a hotdog.

My acting skills are best suited inside of a foam hotdog. ;0)

But, my daughter auditioned for an Oscar Mayer commercial with her best friend Jacob. Sadly, neither Jacob nor Ash made the cut.

But for a brief moment, we had hopes of her on the Rosie show!

I wonder what happened to the winner?

WEEKEND THOUGHTS
