HOW TO FIX SAGGING COUCH CUSHIONS WITHOUT BATTING + VIDEO

June 24, 2021

Sharing a hack to fix sagging couch cushions- it’s like Botox for cushions. I added a video to answer previous questions. Scroll for video.

I have a couch cushion hack today that does not involve batting. If the thought of measuring or wrestling with heavy batting sends you into a sweat this tip is for you!

how to stuff couch cushions without batting

HOW TO FIX SAGGING COUCH CUSHIONS

For most homes, the couch anchors the room. So you can see where sagging couch cushions easily make the space look tired and disheveled.

And, no amount of strategically placed throws or throw pillows  can hide the sag.

And, then there’s the elephant in the room- who wants to sit in the middle of the couch where you sink. It’s like sitting at the kid’s table at Thanksgiving.

It’s awkward and no one wants to sit in the center of the couch.

After awhile sagging couch cushions need a little life. It’s kind of like Botox-there’s only so much sag the toxin can lift. And, then you need to move to a filler- something to plump up the slump.

My hack does not use batting, but rather something you likely have in your linen closet.

THE HACK

Pillows! Pillows are the easiest to solution to a sagging couch cushion.

  • contained
  • come in different levels of firminicity
  • budget friendly
  • new sewing required
  • rectangtular in shape

I ordered these Made in the USA pillows this spring when I shared how to clean down pillows.

pillows

Well, I had an idea and I tested it out on my couches.

My couch has foam cushions inserted into the couch. Essentially, this is an oversized pillow for a couch.

I thought it was going to be a sweat session to add pillows to the insert. I used a clean low density pillow.

The sofa covers are designed to fit snug so keep that in mind. Less (fluff) is best.

I was surprised at how little wrangling I had to do to get this pillow into the back of the couch pillow cover.

It immediately plumped up the back cushion. The best part no lumps or bumps. The pillow straightened the slouch.

This is an easy peasy hack with no batting or lumps. The best part is no one noticed. Which in our house is the best compliment. The minute my husband starts fidgeting with the pillows (or anything) I know he is on to me and one of my hacks or projects.

So that really is my litmus test for any project. Subtle but solves a problem.

Here is another popular tutorial on how to clean down pillows.

Here’s a recent pillow hack if you are staging a bedroom before listing a home. It’s literally a pillow flip.

As a Realtor, I often do last minute staging while the photographer sets up the room. I may bring a few new pillows for those tired couches that should have stayed in the dorm room and need a little lift.

Before you go I would love for you to sign up the Weekend Edit- an easy, breezy four minute read of tips and decor ideas delivered straight to your inbox on Saturday morning. It’s free (someone asked me).

SIMPLE BED PILLOW HACK

June 4, 2021

Sharing a simple bed pillow hack. Like so simple.

I was on a pillow kick in 2020. It started with this fun tutorial on how to wash down pillows. I shared this video on my youtube channel. The video is a bit rough.;0)

And, I bought new pillow covers along the way and these made in the USA pillows.

And, then I finally was ready to “stage” the pillows on the bed. Usually, making the bed is a quick tug to pull up the coverlet and toss a few pillows on opposite edges of the bed.

While I updated our daughter’s room to a part-time guest room I had to work with her teenage era oversized bed/trundle and built-in bookcases.

So here is a simple pillow hack for a bed frame whether it is in your twenty-year-old house or a rental in the city that is short on space.

SIMPLE BED PILLOW HACK

This simple pillow hack turns the traditional horizontal pillow on its side. It elevates the pillows vertically.

Yes, it makes a difference. Run upstairs and try it!

Tips:

To give your pillows the most height possible it’s best to work with a heavier or starched cotton pillowcase.

Your more dense pillows work best because they tend to stand upright on their own. The bottom pillow below is the “weight” you want for your pillows to stand vertically.

I pinched the corners to elevate the vertical look.

And ta-da you have these peeked corners like this.

Instead of a 1/2 dozen accent pillows, you have two to three strategically placed pillows. That’s it!

Oh and speaking of bed frames… remember to do this before moving furniture.

HOW TO CLEAN DOWN PILLOWS

January 14, 2021

sharing tips and the steps on how to clean down pillows

My sister got me hooked on down pillows. It was after I noticed the poly-foam-filled pillows in the wash cycle. When the pillows were immersed in water the pillow fill resembled the underside of the carpet pad of a twenty-five-year-old, damp basement shag carpet.

With that visual in my head that cannot be undone, I was done with those mystery fill pillows.

I switched to down and/or feather/down-filled pillows. And, I decided to buy Made in the USA pillows. These just arrived in a 2-pack.

Here is an Amazon favorite in a 2-pack (too).

Because my sister and I talk about everything from Schitt’s Creek to down pillows she shared with me how to clean down pillows.

The steps work for non-feather-filled pillows with one exception. Gather up your pillows and get ready for an assembly line set up to wash.

HOW TO CLEAN DOWN PILLOWS

1. COLLECT YOUR PILLOWS IN PAIRS

2. REMOVE THE DECORATIVE PILLOW COVER

   how-to-clean-down-pillows

3. IF YOU HAVE A WORN DOWN PILLOW (FEATHERS POKING OUT) STICK YOUR PILLOW INTO A PLAIN PILLOWCASE.

4. TURN YOUR WASHING MACHINE TO THE GENTLE/SLOW CYCLE.

5. ADD 2 PILLOWS PER WASH WITH PILLOWS ON OPPOSITE ENDS TO BALANCE THE WASHING MACHINE.

how-to-clean-down-pillows

6. ADD POWDER DETERGENT. DO NOT USE LAUNDRY PODS.

how-to-wash-down-pillows

Laundry pods can attach to the pillows like leeches.

7. WHEN TRANSFERRING TO THE DRYER ADD A TENNIS BALL TO THE DRYER

(IT WILL BE LOUD, BUT IT HELPS TO DRY THE PILLOWS). I TURN MY HEAT ON HIGH TO DRY THE DOWN.

TIPS

** It kills me not to add a little bleach but apparently it strips the oils from the feathers. With that said, I may add a smidge.

** In the summer I love to dry my pillows between two white towels outside. A breeze is an added bonus!

** Check and clear your lint trap on your dryer.

That’s it. It does take longer between the wash and dry cycle so it feels like an all-day gig.

I break my pillows into sizes and wash the the sleep pillows on one day and the square down pillows for another day. The square pillows get a lot of use during the holidays.
