PATIO IDEAS WHEN YOUR BACKYARD IS A CONCRETE SLAB

If you are living in an apartment with a patio the size of a 4×6 rug these small patio ideas are for you! It also means you have a highly coveted outdoor space for those with only a window view. Like my grandpup, Russell:

APARTMENT LIVING AND PATIOS

On the way to “my” Costco there are rows and rows of apartment buildings.

Out of habit or curiosity I look (when at a stop light) at the small patios and Juliet balconies.

And when I find the one apartment with the cement patio the size of a Yeti cooler and a flower pot? I know.

A future homeowner is residing inside that apartment.

In the meantime, they add flower pots to tiny patios and balconies.

APARTMENT LIVING + PATIOS

Recently, my boys signed apartment leases. My youngest is in Manhattan with a view of a fire escape and my middle child (adult son) signed a lease for a studio apartment in the middle of the suburbs.

He is excited excited to live like a college student again. Instead of a roommate, s, he will be assigned a cadaver.

But what he is most excited about is his studio apartment has a patio with views of a tree and the Amazon delivery trucks.

SMALL PATIO IDEAS

The following suggestions add privacy, a pop of color, and a retreat away from the air conditioning.

  1. CONTAINER GARDENING
  2. ADD ONE CHAIR AND SMALL SIDE TABLE

3. BACKGROUND. NOISE: Wind chimes or a tabletop water feature distracts the noise.

4. ADD FRESH HERBS

This teaches responsibility and the power of nurturing an herb dependent on someone else to thrive and grow. And herbs smell good. Bring herbs inside with the temps drop.

If you don’t have room for herbs you can always move them to your kitchen window. I bleieve that having a plant brings good energy to an enclosed place like an apartment.

But wait there is more!!

If you live in a space with only a concrete patio or a wood deck this thrifty idea is for you! P lant perennials or hearty grasses to add a pop of color. It is a small commitment that provides a pop of color and privacy for less time and money.

Please share these with your adult kids who live in a condo or apartment. I saved my favorite idea for last.

One of my first blog posts years ago was this idea. I loved it then and I love it now. It is a twofer because I used a chipped dish and added greenery. If you have grandchildren or elementary-age children they will have fun with this DIY yard.
