My grandpup Russell was happy to have an open window and a view.
On the way to “my” Costco, there are rows of apartment buildings.
When I preview properties (condos) with a patio the size of a Yeti cooler with a window garden, I want to offer my help! When I see the faux putting green grass I want to add an outdoor rug.
Flower pots to tiny patios or decks add color and wee bit of privacy. and balconies. They “own” the space!

Recently, my boys signed apartment leases. My youngest is in Manhattan, with a view of a fire escape.
My middle rents a one-bedroom apartment with a tiny patio that offers a fresh breeze and views of a tree.
IDEAS FOR A SMALL PATIO OR YARD
The following suggestions add privacy, a pop of color, and a retreat away from the air conditioning.
My general rule of thumb is we should all have one living plant, flower, or herb growing (thriving may be a stretch) in our window, a ledge, or patio. concrete slab.
IDEAS
- Add a potted flower or plant to a windowsill.
- If you have a deck, patio, or cement slab, add a small chair or side table.
- ADD ONE CHAIR AND A SMALL SIDE TABLE

3. BACKGROUND. NOISE:
Wind chimes or a tabletop water feature distracts from the noise.
4. ADD FRESH HERBS
This teaches responsibility and the power of nurturing an herb dependent on someone else to thrive and grow. And herbs smell good. Bring herbs inside with the temperature drop. My basil is going on it’s second fall season in a window!
If you don’t have room for herbs, you can always move them to your kitchen window. I believe that having a plant brings good energy to an enclosed place like an apartment.
But wait there is more!!
If you live in a space with only a concrete patio or a wood deck, this thrifty idea is for you! Plant perennials or hearty grasses to add a pop of color. It is a small commitment that provides a pop of color and privacy for less time and money.

It is a great reminder to make the best of small budgets and the freedom of a low-maintenance yard (or patio).

We have a small yard now and I’m getting used to it. I’m still figuring out what I want to plant on the sides. My pots are doing well but I’d like to add some potted perennials along the back fence line to soften it up.
