IS IT TIME FOR A BEDROOM REFRESH?
For twenty years our bedroom operated like an urgent care. Raising three kids in our brownstone in the suburbs home, our bedroom was where the kids visited for big news, ironing requests, advice, lost and found inquiries, homecoming dilemmas, and sick days (we had a television in our room).
It’s funny that with the worn carpet and scuffed baseboards, it was the holes and subsequent patch from the television mounting bracket (and subsequent drywall patch) that were my tipping point for a bedroom refresh.
I don’t want to make the same mistakes on this modest refresh. So let’s take a quick look into the choices WE thought were a great idea.
PLANKED WALLS
We joined the planked wall trends thanks to Chip and Joanna. We planked the wall behind our bed. When we added new nightstands and dressers it looked more like the lumber yard in Walnut Grove.
Like all trends moderation is key.
Instead, we added wood planks to one wall in the lower level home office. We thought it would warm up the space but it felt more like a barn complete with a sliding barn door.
With thoughts of a bedroom update, I planned to get a head start on pulling the pine boards off the wall.
I hoped to pull off this strategy in the laundry room.
But the bed frame would not budge. So I have to bring my husband up to speed on the plan.
FURNITURE CHOICES
When I found these two chairs on sale at Homegoods I moved the two existing club chairs to our room. The Crate & Barrel chairs are too big for the cozy corner I have planned.
So I will be mixing furniture pieces until I settle on the right scale. Don’t be afraid to mix up your furniture
FIREPLACES (GAS OR ELECTRIC)
When we completed this main floor remodel we updated the builder-grade fireplace (that was no longer up to code). The fireplace is beautiful. It is the BMW addition sitting on a Honda Prelude lot in our bedroom.
Electric fireplaces are another option that does not require a gas line and install or installation expenses.

My first stop for inspiration is Pinterest and Instagram.
Here are a few ideas for my bedroom makeover. As soon as I figure out how to detach the headboard from the bedroom I am pulling those wood planks off the wall. If I start from the floor and move my way up the wall my husband won’t suspect anything for a few weeks.

IDEAS FOR ANY BUDGET
The following images were found on Pinterest. I love the idea of what is in each photo. The reality is budgets, time and the football season will make this a modest update.
PAINT
This all-white bedroom looks so crisp and makes me want to consider white walls. But just like white bedding, white walls and a Bernese Mountain dog (who leans on every wall) are not a clean look.
Look at those pillows and comforter.
My favorite pillows are on sale.
WINDOWS/SUNLIGHT
I love natural light! We bought our house and fell in love with the wood shutters, but the wood shutters limited our views. We removed most of the shutters but kept the ones in our room because our bedroom was more emergency medicine than cosmetic procedures at that stage of our lives.
I love French doors and windows to open up the room and bring in natural light.
FURNITURE
Don’t be afraid to move furniture around. Ask the neighbors to help you move a few pieces and send them home with freshly baked cookies and a little cash.
This chair below is from Amazon. It is in my office and my kids and husband always find their way to this chair when they want to talk one-on-one.
This Sherpa chair is similar to the chairs I found at Homegoods.
Moving along, this next room reminds me of an Airbnb. But what stands out is the oversized fig tree near the window. It adds additional privacy and I love a pop of color in a room with monotone accessories.
Sidenote: I do not like the rug. Fringe is not my friend with a big dog nor do I need to trip and twist something with a wayward strand of fringe.
NOOK IDEAS
I love a nook. If you have a corner in your room you can create a nook. This space below has all the design elements for a bedroom update.

I love the layout of this next bedroom! Currently, our cozy fireplace has two baskets of laundry next to it! I keep Keep it real here at Everyday Edits!
This next photo is from Pottery Barn (I think). I love it! I have bedding goals from this photo below and I love the sheer drapes which add light and green (even if it is photographed in a warehouse or showroom).
Check out the rug … no fringe.
Finally, this last room is a masterclass on all the essentials to include in a bedroom update. A I ove how the pillows are pulled in with the paint color. And, I love the furniture choices for comfort, class, and scale to the room. This is an example where the style is not necessarily my style, but I love the layout and design of the room.

I did a total bedroom refresh but because we moved into a new home! I now have white walls, wood blinds and a lot less room but I love it!! I usually change out a few pillow covers seasonally. We’ll see how it goes. I hate fringe on a rug too!
