IF OUR HARDWOOD FLOORS COULD TALK (OR COMPLAIN)

March 29, 2021

the memories our hardwood floors hold

The best part of the project to refinish our hardwood floors was the clean slate that followed after we hired movers to move our furniture down two flights of stairs.

The movers will be back this week to move the same furniture up two flights of stairs. And as excited as I am to put our house back together, there is a part of me that loves the simplicity of empty space.

hardwood floors

An entirely empty space is a bit of a gift. The expansive hardwood floors have uninterrupted access to every corner and wall.

They are unencumbered.

There are no limits to how we reimagine (or rearrange) the rooms.

IF OUR HARDWOOD FLOORS COULD TALK

It’s also a chance to remember these faded oaky stained floors and how they were the foundation for our family. These floors hold lots of dreams, wishes, fears, arguments, challenges and of course the aftermath of puppy potty training.

These floors absorbed more than those accidents. These hardwood floors hold the memories of raising our children, buying a company and if that wasn’t enough stress building a startup. #smallbusinessowners

These floors were the backdrop to tears and cheers, tennis match wins and losses, first dates, and the inevitable break-ups.. seven days later.

They carried the weight when my husband would be in his office refreshing his bank feed for that much-anticipated wire.

Or me, pacing the floor waiting for a signed contract, making dinner and reviewing spelling words every Thursday night.

The floors were along for the ride as we raised three healthy and active young minds.

The floors certainly felt the spills and cracked eggs that missed the edge of the widest bowl and landed at my feet. Tanner (our Aussie) was always there ready to clean up. I if-these-hardwood-floors-could-talk

There is a huge crater of a scratch in the living room where I tried to move this hutch just a few inches to the right.

It makes me smile every time I see it because I love to do this on a rainy day or free afternoon. I am blessed with a man who is never surprised by the “oops moments.”

HARDWOOD FLOORS

As our nest empties our hearts are full of gratitude and memories. Of course, with the real estate market in Denver, we may have a few boomerang roommates. #realtorlife

I am so excited for this next chapter of our lives as we transition from full-time parents to consultants. Thank you floors for holding us up as a family.

And, guess what… now it’s your day …

And, I am grateful we do not need to move this table.

I would love for you to sign up for my weekly newsletter.

My favorite post, Laura! I loved it-so heartfelt and true. Your house is truly a home full of love, laughter, and joy. The floors, like you and Rod, held up your kids, but held them accountable too.
