HOW TO RESET YOUR KITCHEN
After the holidays, my kitchen looks like an Easy-Bake oven after Christmas break.
The packets of cake mix and the round cake tin were etched with burned cake batter, and a butter knife was wedged between the cake “rack” and the light bulb.
Even then, I failed to read the instructions on the back of the cake mix (add water and mix).
I bet my friend CiCi baked tiered cakes in her Easy-Bake Oven.
After the holidays, my kitchen resembled an Aldi’s stockroom (coming soon to Colorado).
It was time for a kitchen reset.
This was more of a directive from my youngest son than an observation.
After spending the holidays with us, he had enough.
Nothing stresses him out more than clutter and expired canned goods.
The night before,he returned to his NYC apartment with a drawer and a kitchen counter length of a Kindle he took on the task of taking inventory of my kitchen:
- How many cans of beans do I need in the pantry? 13
- What was the oldest expiration date in the pantry? 2013.
- 3. How many kitchen towels do I need on the counter? 5-7
- Mom, why is there a puddle of coffee under the coffee pot? Unknown
- Mom, you don’t need two can openers!
- Somewhere, I went from the kitchen essentials to the “just in case.”
- How many cookie sheets are too many?
- Or how many cheese knives do I need for cubed cheese?
My son pointed out that it makes it harder to find my Go Kitchen scissors or my Pampered Chef mini spatulas – the power players in my kitchen?

Despite my struggles in the kitchen, it never stopped me from wanting fun gadgets and my go-to kitchen utility scissors.
But this year, taking inventory was a step in the right direction.
I learned icing tints expire (harden).
I must say my pared-down pantry is less stressful. It helps me with meal prep.
