HOW TO DOWNSIZE CHRISTMAS DECOR
This sounds like the title of a Hallmark movie.
The comments and suggestions I receive are often related to downsizing.
Here are a few ideas to downsize Christmas decor.
And still, enjoy and celebrate the Christmas spirit and season.
When we think about downsizing, we often get overwhelmed by the basement or attic full of Christmas trees and decades of ornaments.
This is a process, not a deadline!
TIPS TO DOWNSIZE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS
The key to downsizing Christmas is to focus on the understated but classic elements that warm our homes and celebrate the season.
Downsizing starts with subtle holiday decor and a minimalist or scaled-back strategy.
These suggestions keep all your favorites while offering downsized substitutions.
- WREATHS! I am not sure when I went from a front door wreath to wreaths at the back door, the side gates, my office door, and the garage entry door. It is better to go big on one than a 12 ” wreath on every interior and/or exterior door. I love these faux boxwood wreaths for Christmas. Boxwood goes with everything!
2. LIGHTS I have strands of lights. I admit I find a way to use a strand even when half the nine-foot lights do not work. A plastic tub filled with lights is heavy.
This year, I plan to replace the light stands that are missing or have broken bulbs.
These fairy lights, with their soft, warm glow, were a game-changer. I love adding these battery-operated lights in the entry, on windowsills (with garland), and as a centerpiece.
3. GARLAND Â Remember my garland binge? When I found my favorite source for long pine needle garland, I knew my garland was complete. I donated bags of the crunchy garland.
4. CHRISTMAS TREES Years ago, I went on a Hallmark-inspired Christmas tree binge. I came home with this tree in the time it took for my husband to drop me off at my favorite Home Goods store, while he picked up a pizza. I called him nine minutes later and asked him to pull up to the front door where a store employee had the tree on a cart. Surprise!

I knew I had one too many 7-foot trees when I stored this one in our basement bathroom, shower/tub.
5. ORNAMENTS
f you stick to the basics or the high-end ornaments, it helps you weed out the trendy or tired ornaments.
Tip: Donate or gift the excess ornaments to family and friends.
Just as some of us are downsizing, other family members are in the stage where they want to fill their trees with a mix of new and family ornaments.

That sounds like a depressing Hallmark movie. 🙂 I’ve done a lot of downsizing my decorations and I’m still doing it. It’s a process, but I also buy more and rearrange…especially in a new house. I’m trying to make it simpler, lighter and easier to store.
