HOW TO CLEAN THE AIR REGISTERS
The only thing scarier than the Halloween movies streaming this week is what I found in our kitchen air registers. In a rush to feed Elliott, I spilled 1/4 of a 14-pound bag of Nature’s Recipe Salmon and Sweet Potato dog food.
In a slow-motion reel, I watched kibble spill onto the floor instead of the designated dog food bin.
The bite-size kibble wobbled and landed on the kitchen floor next to Elliott’s food and water station.
And I watched the kibble reach the edge of the air register and then it was gone.
How many more kibble pieces made it to the air register?
Thoughts of my house smelling like warm Salmon and Sweet Potatoes instead of the Bath & Body Pine scent Wallflower?
I swept up the bulk of the kibble back into its designated bin tucked discreetly behind a kitchen cabinet.
I tugged at the metal grate nearest kibble. With the air grate removed from the floor, I saw the kibble had made its way through the decorative metal grate and into the vent.
Let’s just say there was more than just dog food under the air register.
I hauled up the vacuum and removed the remaining two kitchen registers from the floor.
Thankfully the air register acted as a kibble colander and prevented the kibble exodus to the unmanned vent below.
I heard a lot of snap, crackle and snorts coming out of the narrow vent below the kitchen wood floor. Hearing the sounds of success I was relieved.
With the vacuum doing the bulk of the work in the vent, I decided to clean the air floor registers.
When we refinished our wood floors I replaced the air grates on our main level.

Here are the steps I took to clean the air registers. Fortunately, the vents and grates were clean in the other rooms. The kitchen registers took the bulk of the baking-related spills like flour (or powdered sugar)?
STEPS TO CLEAN
- add the sink stopper to the kitchen sink.
- cover the bottom of the sink with a heavy dish towel.
- add dish soap and carefully soak each vent.
- Next, I used a cotton rag (designated) for floor use and scrubbed off the gunk that accumulated around the edges of the registers.
