Most of us in Colorado anticipate water restrictions this summer because of our spring-like temps and snow deficits this season.

We used full-coverage sunscreen in February while talking about our yards.

Which takes me back to my least favorite chore evuh!

LAWN MOWING DRAMA

Growing up I dreaded yard work on Saturday mornings.

Before I finished my bowl of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes (it was the 80’s), my dad was hauling out the lawn mower and assigning chores.

I hated yard work-give me a chore with air conditioning.

When I mowed the yard, I had an attitude, while I waitedd for my dad to “sighn off” on the lawn.

I did not want to miss pool time or trips to 7/11 with friends.

But I had to get pass the lawn inspection.

My dad and I would review the direction of my mowing patterns.

Whereas he was symmetrical with his lawn mowing tracks, I preferred to mow in different directions and circular patterns.

My pace and direction were in step with my Walkman Cassette tape of the week.

My dad would inspect the yard, exasperated by my non-linear lawn-mowing moves.

I argued it was artistic expression, and the grass would grow no matter what direction I mowed. I exasperated my dad.

So now I am giggling to myself and waiting for my dad to provide a longer list of yard work tips.

These tips are focused on water usage and preservation. Yes, my East Coast friends may not have the same challenges, but these ideas work in all climates.

Reduce lawn size.

This does not mean you need to tear out your current yard and replace it with artificial grass.

Instead, add container gardens and pots.

OUr neighbors added horizontal pavers to create a path from the front door to the back. I love the look, and the pavers cost less than concrete.

PLANTS

Think of your plants as pieces of furniture and group them to create corners or walkways with flowers or perennials.

Potted plants let you adjust their location based on the weather forecast or the dog days of summer.

Rearrange planters and garden location based on sun and shade.

I learned this lesson too late, and I literally fried my green/red tomatoes with too much sun.

Mulch is another way to keep weeds below ground, and help surrounding plants and flowers retain moisture.

Water plants in the early and evening hours. I know this, but some days I just have to give my flowers a little afternoon boost.

Collect water. Different municipalities have different rerestrictions. Until we get a rain barrel, I like to keep a pitcher and toss leftover water and ice into my outdoor pots and flower beds.

My dad swears by a moisture meter to make sure your perennials and tomatoes are getting adequate water. This ermoisture meter is a best seller on Amazon. But I bet my dad bought his at Home Depot or Ace Hardware.
