CHECK OUT HOW TO CLEAN SCISSORS
I have scissors in most drawers in my house. Scissors are like toilet paper rolls- I never want to be inconvenienced by not having a pair in the kitchen laundry or bathroom drawers. With all these scissors I picked up a few tips on how to clean scissors and the secret ingredient to clean sticky scissors.
I keep a pair in this dresser drawer in the entry so I can break down the Amazon boxes, Chewy boxes and these blue and white buffalo check boxes.
I keep everyday scissors in my kitchen junk drawer and kitchen shears in a separate drawer designated for kitchen gadgets.
But sometimes the Cutco kitchen scissors get used for nonfood tasks and the Fiskar scissors are used to trim Elliott’s unruly tail. I know, don’t judge but Berners tails are like an oscillating fan 2 inches off the floor.
I clean kitchen scissors, but the scissors tasked with cutting cardboard boxes (that travel in a truck) and dog food bags were never (rarely) cleaned. Last year I added utility scissors to my cleaning rotations.
HOW TO CLEAN SCISSORS
Just like cleaning our down-filled pillows, this is a great reminder to add the scissors to the dishwasher.
SUGGESTIONS
- gather the utility scissors and any kitchen shears. Open the scissors and remove any debris.
- Rubbing alcohol removes residue buildup on scissors. This is helpful for utility scissors that accumulate the adhesive residue on packing tape.
- Place open scissors on the top shelf of the dishwasher.
- Scissors can shift and slide so be careful when unloading the top rack of the dishwasher.
- Depending on your dry settings you may want to towel dry the edges to prevent rust.
- Whenever I have space in the dishwasher I grab the kitchen shears and/or utility scissors. I also throw these items into the dishwasher on the top or lower rack when space allows.
FAVORITE SCISSORS
I love the Cutco, made-in-the-USA scissors with their come-apart blades. Cutco is available at Costco, but I don’t know if they sell the scissors as a stand-alone item. They are pricier but I have had these titanium favorites for over a decade. They are heavy enough that they “don’t go walking” out of the kitchen.
These Fiskar utility scissors are a best seller on Amazon.
Bianco specializes in medical instruments, but this affordable utility pair is in my kitchen gadget drawer. I
And is more affordable than the Cutco brand.

I love my Fiskars but I use them to trim strings on towels and I cut the fuzz balls off anything that has them. But they get plugged up with fuzz and washing them and using alcohol doesn’t do it. Do I need a certain kind of screw driver or wrench to disassemble them?
Thanks for the tip. I use scissors for all you mentioned and any other need that pops up. I have a pair in every room, seriously. On top of that I have 3 pair of kids scissors for the grandkids. Haha.
