5 WAYS TO USE GRAPEVINE GARLAND

May 3, 2022

This past year I discovered the awesomeness of grapevine garland. If any of my kids are reading my blog this morning there is a collective eye roll and a group text.

I guarantee you my boys could not identify grapevine garland despite it being in just about every room in our house.

how to use grapevine garland

VERSATILITY

One could argue, that this woody, twig garland is one of the most universal decor staples.

It adds height, dimension, depth, character, warmth, and most importantly…

it hides dust.

Even the “scraps” are great for filler and small accessories. And it is not a space hog. Grapevine garland can be stored flat (which why would you ever need to store it?), but it stores easily.

In my house, it is a year-round staple.

Are you ready? Let’s take a look at ideas on how to add grapevine garland tojust about any space.

5 IDEAS TO USE GRAPEVINE GARLAND

PORCHES

I love garland in my planters.

Twig-like garland is perfect for planters. It is like a good bra- it elevates and lifts.

This twiggy garland has the power to add volume and height. You can see last year’s fall porch here.

The twiggy garland holds up well in wind, rain or snow. So it works well for all holidays and seasons.

5 ideas to use grapevine garland

THINK OF GARLAND LIKE A SCARF

Grapevine works like a scarf. It adds a bit of warmth and texture around the neck or in this case around the milk can.

If you have a bucket and it needs a little help add a bit of grapevine.

WREATHS

WREATHS + CENTERPIECES

Grapevine beefs up wreaths. It adds a little depth to just your everyday wreath. I love to pair this woody garland with my boxwood wreaths.

My centerpieces almost always have a ring of grapevine around the middle.

I love to add garland to fresh greens during Christmas. It just adds a little extra something to the fresh branches.

PLANTS

Adding grapevine to plants is one of my favorite ways to use this twiggy garland. It makes sense to pair a plant with a twig, right?

Grapevine garland is the workhorse for small accessories like pots and planters.

GRAPEVINE RESOURCES

I have purchased twiggy garland at Hobby Lobby, but on the weeks the garland is not on sale I I found this garland. .

THE WEEKEND EDIT +GARAGE SALE SHENANIGANS

April 30, 2022

Happy Saturday

As I type this week’s Weekend Edit am I sitting on my porch steps overseeing our garage sale. A lady who was interested in my glass jars asked me if I had them in black?

Let me check in the back. #snarkyseller

There is something about making $15 on a chair I paid $145 two years ago. I love it when I have a $2 dollar sticker on an unopened box of glasses from Homegoods and someone asks if I will take a dollar.

I should mention I bought my neighbor’s china for $20 and a set of glass bowls. They are hiding in my dining room hutch.

What are your stories bout garage sales?

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • This DIY fire bowl looks like a fun outdoor addition.
  • I am reading Where the Forest Meets the Stars for book club. I really like it, but I don’t think it is for everyone. I can’t wait to discuss at book club.
  • This is perfect for a cozy deck or tiny corner of your yard.
  • Here are 100 ways to change your life.
  • Now that I sold my stuff I bought this for a tiny corner in my backyard.

THESE CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER RITZ COOKIES ARE THAT GOOD!

April 28, 2022

Sharing an easy recipe with melted milk chocolate and peanut butter to make Ritz cookies.

Today I am sharing a no-bake recipe that includes mouth-watering Ritz crackers, peanut butter and milk chocolate. Together, these simple ingredients make the perfect combo of chocolate, peanut butter and salty crackers. And the best part? No utensils are needed to serve these on a tiny cake plate.

That just saved you a a few hundred seconds.

Did you know Ritz crackers were introduced in 1934? You can read other fun facts about this depresseion era cracker here.

Did I mentione these bite-size Ritz cookies do not require an oven?

You do need a microwave or stove.

These Ritz cookies freeze well. Which means, you you can hide them behind the frozen Rhodes rolls from the holidays.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER RITZ COOKIES

Chocolate Peanut Butter Ritz Cookies

INGREDIENT LIST

This is a no-bake treat and you only need peanut butter, milk chocolate chips and butter crackers and sprinkles.

If you are counting calories you can skip the sprinkles.

The recipe includes three items in three aisles at the grocery store.

This dessert reminds me of this seasonal favorite bite size treat.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Ritz Cookies

HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER RITZ COOKIES

This is a bit of a messy recipe so I suggest lining your counters with wax paper or foil.

I lined up my oval shaped crackers on wax paper in rows.

Make sure to save enough crackers to “top off” the bottom cracker.

Next spread a bit of creamy peanut butter on one side of each Ritz.

Top it off with a second cracker.

Using a glass measuring cup or microwavable bowl melt the chocolate chips.

Heat the chips in 30-second increments and stir after each 1/2 minute.

Using a spoon I dipped each stacked cracker into the milk chocolate.

If you want less chocolate try dipping just one end of thestacked cracker.

You could drizzle the melted chocolate over the stacked crackers.

I dunked most of my cracker stacks and drizzled the remaining melted milk chocolate over the remaining 1/2 dozen cookies. Showing a hint of the cracker’s scalloped edge.

Honestly, I never thought to create a cracker sandwiched between peanut butter and dipped in chocolate.

No Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Ritz Cookies

I added sprinkles to about 1/2 of the batch.

That’s it! The recipe is below.

    5. STIR BETWEEN EACH 1/2 MINUTE

MY FAVORITE WAYFAIR OUTDOOR RUGS

April 27, 2022

Sharing a few of my favorite outdoor rugs at Wayfair for porches, patios and decks.

This time of year our yard looks like a mullet. The front yard has tulips and sunshine. And the north-facing backyard looks like it needs to slam a Red Bull.

So this year we made a plan.

We cleared the patio of all furniture, patio cushions, and side tables.

And as a dear friend told me years ago- clear the space first.

Just like interior rugs, outdoor rugs help to define and cozy up the space.

Wayfair’s annual Way Day sale sounded like a good time to find a rug.

SPRING BASKET TRAY

April 26, 2022

Hello! Welcome to this month’s Pinterest Challenge hosted by Cindy who blogs at County Road 407. These Pinterest challenges are all about using what we have in our seasonal decor. This month our focus was on spring centerpieces. I decided to bring out a basket tray for my family room.

If you are visiting from Laura’s blog, Decor to Adore, welcome to Everyday Edits. We are joining our group coordinator, Cindy and her monthly challenges that push our creativity without busting our budgets.

Cindy found this month’s inspiration over at Emily’s blog *** who shared her spring centerpiece for her entry table.

Here is the image for the inspirational entry table decor for spring.

Emily’s centerpiece includes so many eye-catching details. She used real dirt and fresh flowers!

Two things I realized I have never used in a centerpiece.

Until this challenge, my floral arrangements required no water or sun.

SPRING FAMILY ROOM CENTERPIECE DETAILS

  • basket
  • flowers (and dirt)
  • candles
spring basket tray for coffee table

This is what I love about these challenges- they take me out of my comfort zone and push my creativity and curiosity.

I wanted to add a tray to our family room. Because our coffee table is centered in front of our television I try to keep the centerpieces low profile so they don’t disrupt Sunday afternoon sporting events.

Spring centerpiece for coffee table

Some of you may recognize the Pottery Barn Water Hyacinthbasekt knockoff.

When I revisited Emily’s centerpiece I noticed the live flowers.

Our Home Depot is short on flowers, but they had fresh herbs n stock.

The fresh herbs smell wonderful.

Our family room gets morning sun and afternoon shade.

And with two Bernese mountain dogs with their fluffy, wind generating tails, I have to be mindful of tails and noses.

My family room smells amazing.

Thank you for stopping by for this spring tour! I would love it if you pinned this for others to find on Pinterest. Looking for one more spring arrangement don’t miss Cindy’s post.

HOW TO MAKE BIRDSEED CAKES

April 25, 2022

I have not spent so much time in my backyard since the days of Sun-In and Coppertone.

On the days me and my sister we were not at the pool we set up an oscillating fan and rearranged the patio chaises for the optimal sun. What a difference 30 (ahem) years makes.

So last week, as I dipped my toes into the yard, I evaluated my backyard and introduced this idea.

Have you heard of it?

It is a fun way to encourage habitats in the backyard (except for Charlotte- I want her to relocate).

I picked up a bag of birdseed to encourage the birds to visit our yard.

I decided birdseed cakes were a great way to entertain my new guests.

HOW TO MAKE BIRDSEED CAKES

how to make birdseed cakes

The best part of figuring out how to make birdseed cakes is that the recipe is almost failproof.

The only thing I did not have on in my pantry was unflavored gelatin.

The second best part of these birdseed cakes was the refreshing reminder that birds (and squirrels) are not picky eaters. It was like an all-you-can-eat birdseed buffet for the birds (and squirrels).

There was no social distancing between these backyard critters.

how to make birdseed cakes

RECIPE DETAILS

The recipe is below and the preparation is the same for any cake. Just follow the directions.

The first batch was extra sticky and required more dry time. The birds did not complain.

For my first batch, I used this Made in USA mini-bundt cake form.

How cute is this birdseed (bitty bundt) cake? Keep scrolling for the recipe below.

Don’t forget the packet of unflavored gelatin.

For my second batch, I repurposed plastic trays.

  • This would be a fun happy hour activity with girlfriends too!
  • Supervision is needed with kids because of the hot water. The mixture cools quickly with the flour and birdseed.
  • Save plastic containers for the birdseed forms.

HOW TO REPURPOSE RETAIL BOXES

April 23, 2022

How to repurpose retail boxes for a repurposed life. Please pin or tweet to your favorite retailers. This post has been updated to reflect additional ideas so we all look to repurpose a little bit more.Happy Earth Day

I love the ease of click-and-ship purchases; the convenience, the free shipping and the no hassle returns of my favorite retailers. But, I don’t love the guilt that sneaks up on me when I toss or break down the familiar brown boxes into the recycle bin.

If you have stopped by Everyday Edits for 1/2 a minute (some of you are here less than 15 seconds) you know I love to repurpose stuff.

Like these heavy-duty Anthropologie shopping bags.

After I placed a recent order for hand soaps and candles imagine my excitement when this box was delivered to my front door.

So when I ordered my quarterly Bath & Body Works foaming hand soaps and seasonal candles I was just as excited in the plaid boxes as the pumpkin spice candles.

I had to figure out a way how to repurpose these adorable blue and white buffalo check boxes.

So for a few seasons, I hoarded Bath & Body Works boxes. I just stored them in the basement.

HOW TO UPCYCLE RETAIL BOXES

For a caffeinated fueled moment, I considered framing the flat sides of the retail boxes for my office walls. But, as the caffeine wore off, I decided to start with a less ambitious project. One that only required a roll of clear packing tape.

I folded the plaid facing sides of the Bath & Body Works boxes to the exterior side of the box and secured them with a clear, clean edge of packing tape.

That’s it! Never overthink a way how to repurpose retail boxes.

I used these sturdy boxes when I reconfigured this closet.

With a few boxes remaining (remember I saved them for several seasons) I used one side of a Bath & Body Works box and framed it. I thought it would be a cute way to coordinate the pattern in my office.

With the same idea, I combined two panels and added this inexpensive wall art to my daughter’s room.

I wonder how long until my family recognizes the familiar retailer’s packaging?

And, then I will wait for …

collective eye roll.

There is always an eye roll after mom repurposes an everyday object that deserves a repurposed life.

Seriously, are these not the cutest retail boxes ever?

Are you taking note Chewy? Target? Amazon? Nordstrom? I wish Chewy would create a box with bio-degradable ink and paw prints. How cute would that be! Someone tweet this to Chewy!

THE WEEKEND EDIT + THE PLASTIC BAG LADY

April 23, 2022

Hello Saturday and Happy Belated Earth Day.

I almost filed for divorce in the self-checkout at Kroger over my husband’s excessive use of plastic bags. It turns out I have a visceral reaction to rebagging items, like napkins, that are (already) encased in plastic.

Apparently, the love of my life has never purchased an item without a takeaway plastic bag.

If I had one wish for earth day it would be fewer plastic bags and these wishes.

how-to-decorate-the-house-for spring-everyday-edits

Sidenote: No political statements I just have a visceral reaction to plastic bags and rounded fonts.

In other news, my tennis partner and I won our USTA match.

My kids suggested I should pick up a racquet between October and April.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • Michael shared these margarita recipes you can try before Cinco de Mayo.
  • I ordered this cute beach coverup.

HOW TO REWILD YOUR YARD

April 22, 2022

In honor of Earth Day, I updated this post to share how to rewild your yard!

Is it warming up where you live? As the temps creep up I spend more time in our yard. With spring in the air, I decided it was time to tackle the idea of how to rewild our backyards. Have you heard of this?

All the outdoorsy kids are talking about this concept of a rewild.

how to rewild a yard,

The concept of how to rewild your yard is to find ways to create mini habitats to encourage wildlife to enjoy our yards. It is like creating an extended Airbnb for birds, squirrels, rabbits, and owls.

Here is the more technical definition of the science behind a rewild.

how to rewild the yard, patio, deck or terrace

The squirrels were the first to join the backyard party.

I had several ideas on how to rewild my yard but decided to start small to see how my guests managed the property.

HOW TO REWILD YOUR BACKYARD

how to rewild the yard

STEPS TO REWILD

  • I added flower pots and placed them in different areas and positions.
  • Some pots were on the patio and I had others on my DIY window ledge.

My flowers and boxwood provided shade and a pop of color.

I mean don’t all guests love fresh flowers?

Add mulch for ground cover and low-sitting pots. Mulch protects the soil and garden beds which means little guys that like to chill in the soil can take shelter and add their own nutrients.

I made these cement pavers to protect the soil around my mint.

Over time, the pavers and mulch became a place for tiny critters to nestle.

It was a two-for-one rewild event.

steps to rewild the yard or a patio

The only purchase I made was for the birdseed at Target. And I found this birdhouse for $5.00.

To add extra birdseed stations, I used one of my glass candle jars from this upcycle project.

I filled the jar with birdseed and tied it to a branch in a corner of our yard. It blends into the background.

I will wait for the squirrels to take a swing on my repurposed candle jar. Do any of you recognize this candle from Homegoods?

I bought those candles for the jars.

how-to-rewild-the-yard

With plenty of birdseed, I went through my recyclables and found an empty egg carton. I added peanut butter to each egg section and covered it with birdseed.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well, I lodged the egg carton in an Aspen tree and somebody got to it and I found an empty egg carton on the flagstone the next morning.

Thank you for stopping by and let me know your plans to rewild the yard! If you enjoyed this one-hour project please sign up for the Weekend Edit where i share my tips and projects on Saturday mornings. You can sign up here.

THE CUTEST CLEARANCE FINDS FOR SHELVES

April 20, 2022

I rediscovered Hobby Lobby this winter. My sister noticed it because every time she called I was headed to or from the craft epicenter. But when I began my spending hiatus in February that included the HobLob! But the clearance section was fair game.

Until my self-imposed spending hiatus, I rarely paid attention to the clearance section at Hobby Lobby. Occasionally I found wired ribbon on clearance, but the clearance shelves were like a temperature-controlled indoor garage sale.

You know what happens when you find a clearance bin? It taps into our inner crafter-mine went into hiding when I had three children and an Australian Shepherd (Tanner).

We all have a crafty side, but sometimes we need a clearance bin to get our craft back on track.

THE CUTEST CLEARANCE FINDS AT HOBBY LOBBY

clearance finds at Hobby Lobby

I last shared my Homegoods Christmas clearance finds and I think that is what got me to take revisit clearance bins.

I always hit the red sale tab at Williams-Sonoma and the clearance shelves at Target.

And then I went on a spending hiatus at the end of January which just meant I ate more cheese. I changed one habit for another.

clearance finds

But there is something about finding a clearance item when it is just right for you or your house or your dog!

I found these wood-shaped houses and if you are a frequent visitor here at Everyday Edits you know I have a thing for houses. #realtorlife

And apparently for clearance finds!

Styling my office bookcase has been a bit of a struggle. Hopefully, this is a before photo of my office shelves.

I did share this fun idea to step up your books here.

I painted the little wood houses green because I love a navy and green combo.

It is next to the dollar-ish ceramic house from Target.

My vision originally was to have an entire bookcase of petite houses including birdhouses and ceramic ones. But then I found this lamp for under $8 and I may need to work this into my shelves.

What do you think?

Too much?

I found this adorable blue and white polka dot canister with a lid.

I store my loose change in it!

HOW TO UPCYCLE CHIPPED DISHES

April 19, 2022

This up-cycle project was the result of a split-second decision to consider a second life for a tired soup bowl. Usually, I either toss or donate an item that is past its prime. And, that’s almost what I did when my favorite crock pot-shaped soup bowls began to chip. Here’s a fun way to up-cycle chipped dishes.

This up-cycle project works great for those small chipped dishes that might not be table worthy for guests, but still, have a lot of potential uses.

how to upcycle chipped dishes

HOW TO UPCYCLE CHIPPED DISHES

I had a few chipped crock soup bowls from an aggressive dishwasher loader. That is when I got the idea that these green bowls would be cute on my tiny deck. It was the perfect size to add to my tiny cylinder table. I pulled those clumps of grass that always migrate to the other side of the border.

You know those clumps of grasses that think the grass is greener on the other side? wink

The clumps of grass worked out well because they are easy to maintain and they grow vertical. The grass added some much-needed greenery to a tiny space.

TIP: If you have a tiny apartment or condo deck these repurposed bowls are a fun one-hour project on a Saturday morning.

Or a fun craft project this summer with kids, cousins or grandkids.

Everyone goes home with chipped dishes filled with freshly pulled grass!

It reminds me of when we used to pick dandelions and asked our mom to put them in water.

Before you leave, here is another fun up-cycle if you have a small side table in the basement or garage.

THE WEEKEND EDIT + WINE TASTING

April 16, 2022

Hello Saturday and Happy Easter.

Well if you missed last week’s Weekend Edit it was a bit of fun in Ohio for the Mother-Son Weekend. You can read the first two paragraphs here to get up to speed.

And if you are reading today’s Weekend Edit and thinking it sounds familiar well this is the wine tasting story (not the airport story).

Do you remember I mentioned how excited I was for the wine tasting when this announcement showed up in my inbox?

Well, imagine my surprise last Saturday (after the airport mixup) when I was all ready for the wine tasting. I had visions of wines (same image as last week) from different regions for the mother-son wine tasting. Maybe a charcuterie board?

So imagine my reaction when I opened the back door of the fraternity house and saw banquet tables with Franzia boxed wine. Sigh and smile because it was perfect!

I loved it! It is so college! Oh, you guys it was just the cutest thing to have these college boys purchasing the finest blends of Franzia Chards and White Zins.

And when I asked if they had a boxed wine of a Rose one of the pledges said, without skipping a beat, “Oh Mrs. Nuss, did you know White Zinfandel is the baby sister to the Rose?”

Guess what he is studying in college?

You guys I am not a wine snob. I love boxed wine. I bring one to most USTA matches. I love the labels and the packaging.

But the Franzia was such a throwback and I am guessing the cheapest. But when I heard the White Zin is the baby sister to the Rose I knew I had to share this story with you!

You know these are the stories we remember and not the ones where everything was perfect. Who wants to hear about someone’s perfect life.

We had a mother-son twinning contest! My girlfriend purchased these sweatshirts for our Cape Cod trip in August. So I packed these and ordered 2 bucket hats and shipped them to Evan’s house at school.

It was a great weekend.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS BEFORE EASTER

  • My friend Katie at Preppy Empty Nester shared this Easter trivia.
  • I borrowed this frozen drink recipe from my west coast friend, Juliet’s blog.
  • Maybe for next year.
