THE WEEKEND EDIT THE HALLOWEEN ISSUE

October 16, 2021

Hello Saturday!

How are you this weekend? It was a busy week here after being back east for ten days with friends. I shared a few photos on Instagram. As much fun as it was it is always nice to settle into fall at home and nest a bit. Most years this is the season where real estate slows down until the first quarter. I call this my sabbatical season. After seeing this photo in the Beacon Hill neighborhood I have a serious case of porch envy. Can you imagine if you had complete strangers Instagramming your front porch? #porchgoals

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  1. I can’t believe I just started to watch this show. I love it. I fast forward the L&D scenes, but I love the characters.
  2. I love this everyday, cotton blouse. It’s always on sale too! .
  3. I am looking for a good no-caffeine tea? Any suggestions?

4. I finished this book but did not love this bestseller. Maybe because I was flying while reading it. What are you reading this month? I need a few suggestions.

5. My sister made these cupcakes.

6. My blog Heather shared her fav Trader Joe finds. Even though she is on the east coast, I find the same stuff at our closest TJ in Greenwood Village).

7. Raise your hand if you have too many lanterns. Here’s a fun, thrifty way to decorate a lantern for Christmas.

Please share this blog or follow me on social media. Also, send me your real estate questions. (No matter where you live- the process and emotions have no state boundaries).

TIPS FOR A SUPER EASY HALLOWEEN TABLESCAPE

October 13, 2021

Sharing a super easy Halloween tablescape for big or little spaces.

I am thrilled with how these easy and thrifty ideas came together for a fun tablescape or breakfast nook. This was so fun to create over a few days as I foraged my house for orange and black and subtle shades of green.

You could set this up on your front porch and call it a day! It’s that easy!

HOW TO CREATE A SUPER EASY HALLOWEEN TABLESCAPE

1.REPURPOSE

I repurposed an assortment of bottles and jars with spray paint. The orange spray paint was leftover from a landscape project. The neon orange was the perfect shade.

how-to create-super-easy-Halloween-tablescape

If you are a reader at Everyday Edits you know I love to share repurposed/upcycled ideas.

I keep a bin full of fun jars and plastic forms for when the mood (or boredom) kicks in and I need to repurpose something.

2. DECOR STAPLES

I am not a fan of straws (lip lines and the environment), but these black and white straws add a pop of color to this recycled glass.

I haul out these straws during the Halloween season for decor.

3. ADD FOOD OR DRINK

I mentioned the wine bottle but I loved that the wine bottles fit into this haunted house.

What a fun way to sneak a bottle of wine. I love to add a few bottles of glass water bottles to add to a tablescape.

how-to create-super-easy-Halloween-tablescape

4. SHOP YOUR HOUSE FOR A SUPER EASY HALLOWEEN TABLESCAPE

I added fun bottles to add pops of color and height. Does anyone recognize those 1/2 size wine bottles from Costco?

I pulled that green clay pot from my daughter’s school craft bin. Did you see the idea on my Youtube Channel?

Would love a follow on Youtube!

5. RETHINK SEASONAL DECOR

I found these green lanterns a few years ago at Ikea.

I bought the lanterns for the summer, but this shade of green works for Halloween.

5. STACK OF GLASS (PLATES)

These spooky plates were a gift from my friend CiCI.

I found these black and white gingham cloth napkins here. I am on a mission to buy these oversized napkins in every color for every season. Gingham is very forgiving with bbq sauce and catsup.

I created a stacked place setting using these plates from this hack.

The petite cake plate adds some vertical interest if serving a buffett.

I love this trick with how to get more bang for your buck with place settings.

Here is my sneaky trick and details. details.

how-to create-super-easy-Halloween-tablescape

The fun part of this tablescape was how it morphed into a breakfast nook tablescape and the beverage bar (which is essentially a counter with bottled waters and wine).

how-to create-Halloween-tablescape

It doesn’t have to be fancy to give it a fun title.

6. SPRAY PAINT FLORALS

Finally, I used cotton stems and spray-painted them black for a spooky vibe.

The cotton stems look like they are covered with cobwebs.

how-to create-Halloween-tablescape

That’s it! I hope these ideas get you excited to shop your house or garage to create a thrifty Halloween table. The best part is you can create a tablescape in just about any space. (I’m talking to you my apartment dwelling readers!

Have fun! I love comments or share on Pinterest. You can find more Halloween ideas here.

How to Make Halloween Donuts in Minutes

October 26, 2020

a last-minute idea to make Halloween donuts for dessert or breakfast

Halloween may look a little different this year which makes these Halloween donuts all the more special. The last week of October is packed with social events and school-related deadlines. In Colorado, Halloween usually brings snow and frigid temps! With a few Halloween parties on the calendar, I always include Halloween theme donuts in the dessert lineup. Here is how to make Halloween donuts in a minute.

HALLOWEEN DONUTS IN A MINUTE

Every year, I plan to make a Pinterest worthy Halloween dessert. And, every year I realize I lack the patience or maybe it’s talent. And, that is how I made these these fun and inexpensive Halloween donuts.

These Halloween Donuts take a minute to prepare and you only need 2-3 items from the baking aisle.

how-to-make-Halloween-donuts-in-a-minute

These Halloween donuts are fun, easy and guaranteed to get a reaction from a crowd of teenage boys. And, kids and families of all ages can join in the fun. It’s foolproof and fun-packed for all ages and stages.

GHOST APPROVED DONUTS

  •  no oven required to make these donuts
  • the ingredient list is in two aisles (bakery & baking aisles)
  • flexible ingredients
  • inexpensive
  • all ages and stages can enjoy this fun
  • makes for a fun Halloween, bite-size dessert

How-to-make-Halloween-donuts-in-a-minute

The best part? All you need is a bag of mini donuts. I bought a few bags of Hostess donuts, icing gel and a tub of icing.

halloween-donuts

If you buy the donut holes in the plastic containers in the bakery they are $3.49 or you can head towards the English muffins and buy the Hostess bag of cake donuts for $1.99.

Halloween-donuts-in-a-minute

I used Halloween themed cupcake liners to serve as a plate/napkin for the donuts. The cupcake liners reign in the powdered sugar and minimize sticky fingers!

So easy. No cleanup. No sticky counters.

Happy Halloween! Hope these Spooky Donuts show up in your kitchen!

Looking for a fun autumn cookie, check out this recipe! It’s an easy alternative to sugar cookie cutouts! And this Halloween theme Chex mix was a winner in my boys’ college care packages for them and their roommates.

HALLOWEEN CHEX MIX

October 12, 2020

Bugles, pumpkin spice and candy corn make this Halloween Chex Mix                                 a new favorite treat.

I made five pounds of Halloween Chex mix and shipped four pounds to eleven college boys at three different universities.

It’s okay if you have to re-read that sentence. Not only is it closing in on Halloween, but it is also a care package season. I was happy to make (and sample)  this easy to ship salty-sweet combination of cereal, pretzels, chocolate and the autumn staple; candy corn.

The Gouhl M&M’s make this a Halloween theme Chex Mix as opposed to a harvest Chex mix.

Halloween-Chex-mix-everyday-edits

With my boys away at school and in semi-isolation in the midwest, I wanted to send them a “shelf-stable” homemade treat. Versus, something they could order on our family’s Amazon account.

HALLOWEEN CHEX MIX

This Halloween mix includes the standard base of rice cereal, pretzel twists and peanuts. But this recipe adds Bugles, M&M’s and candy corn to give it the tastiest of flavors.

It is addictive. It’s like Bugle and candy corn crack mix with pumpkin spice flavors.

I ate 1 cup of the 2nd batch in the time it took to write the first paragraph.

Halloween-Chex-mix-everyday-edits

The secret to this recipe is the pumpkin spice coating. It is a melted combination of butter, brown sugar and a generous serving of pumpkin spice. Yum!

Make sure you have pumpkin spice in your pantry and no substitutions on this spice. If you have read my blog for a minute you know I love an ingredient substitution.

THE WEEKEND EDIT + MY VISCERAL REACTION TO THIS

April 2, 2022

HAPPY SATURDAY!

Happy Saturday. I almost said Monday! This real estate market frustrates me. My buyers can barely get into a home before the sellers accept an offer. I just want my buyers to feel like their showing matters. #realtorlife

So after a morning of showings, ranting to my husband about my visceral reaction to a television trend was just a typical Friday night.

My family is used to my visceral reactions to things (like rounded fonts).

MY VISCERAL REACTION TO THIS (and rounded fonts).

Here is my rant:

When did going to the bathroom become a standard scene in almost every series? Really? Like we as the audience don’t have the capacity to guess/assume/surmise (my new word) what is taking place behind the bathroom door in every Netflix or Hulu show?

In fact, in all my years of a real estate broker and blogger, I have only captured one photo of a toilet.

It was in my house and it was one of my first blog posts.

I found this sticker on Etsy and just had to get it for my boys’ bathroom for Halloween. Let’s just say they had zero reaction.

Hopping off my seat.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • Now, who watched the Oscars?
  • I am reading 1000 White Women. We did not learn about this deal in history class.
  • Is there such a thing as too much peanut butter? Check out this recipe.
  • This coconut cake recipe is perfect for Easterand in amazing news I made it!
  • This burger bar is a serious bbq goal for summer.

THE WEEKEND EDIT +WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THIS ROOM

March 19, 2022

HAPPY SATURDAY!

This time of year between snow and sun I like to get organized. To hold myself accountable, I am on a self-imposed … spending hiatus.

To appreciate the task to get organized you have to check out what is behind this lower level (basement) barn door. This grainy photo should give you a clue. Or, if you are an auditory learner just queue the creepy music in every scary, PG Halloween movie.

My goal is to organize these boxes into holidays, crafts, seasons and the what was I thinking pile? Please tell me you have a room or a closet that resembles this chaos.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • I know what you are thinking.. that’s a lot of Crate & Barrel boxes.
  • At some point I created a label for a bin dedicated to chips.
  • I bought these clear bins at Target to help me sort thru this mess (and see) the contents.
  • I uploaded this new video to my Youtube channel. I would love if you subscribed!
  • It is an update to this post about saggy couch (back) cushions.
  • I returned these pink bufallo check pillow cases. The fabric was similar to the metal folding chairs in the 70’s.
  • As soon as I opened the Amazon bag, I thought I must let everyone know: do not buy these pillows!
  • I updated the graphic of these pillows at the bottom of this post. ;0)
  • I ordered a few of these pillow cases on Etsy (recommended from my Dallas friend Katie.
  • I bought this for my garage entry door makeover that I shared last week.
  • That’s it. Spending hiatus in effect!
  • Moving along! And now I have a really fun craft idea for all of those vases under your sink.

THE WEEKEND EDIT TURKEYS, ZILLOW +DAYLIGHT SAVINGS

November 6, 2021

Happy Weekend

Hi Everyone! It’s the first weekend of November and we are headed towards Thanksgiving. Clearly I have a few ideas in my head based on my subject line! Did you find a turkey? Apparently, there is a shortage. My mom is on the lookout for a 20-pound turkey! If anyone can snag a turkey it’s my mom! It was a busy week in my work life as a Realtor. I grabbed a bite to eat with my Realtor friends the other night and we had a great time. For the first time in years, we did not talk about real estate deals. It was so refreshing. I think we are all exhausted from this crazy market. This Zillow announcement did not surprise any of us.

WEEKEND THOUGHTS

  • In bigger news, I decided to grow out my bangs (again).
  • We finished Season 2 of Ted Lasso.
  • I am rewatching Wings on Hulu. I forgot how much I loved this show. Hulu has all the classic comedies.
  • I need a new old-school paper calendar. I love pen to paper.
  • I am ordering this subscription for my boys. Don’t worry they don’t read The Weekend Edit.
  • Chloe and Elliott dressed up as bumble bees for Halloween. I shared their costumes here.
  • I just ordered this sweater. There is no such thing as too many sweaters.
  • Google informed me this is my most popular post ever.

BLUE AND WHITE PUMPKINS IN NOVEMBER

November 4, 2021

Do you ever think that Thanksgiving is rushed off the calendar? It just feels like September and October get the pumpkins, gourds and candy corn. By the time the calendar turns to November, the squirrels have had a pumpkin buffet on the front porch steps. So this year I am determined to give November a little attention and these blue and white pumpkins are perfect for the autumn colors, minus the green and purple of Halloween’s past.

BLUE AND WHITE PUMPKINS IN NOVEMBER

blue and white pumpkins, blue and white, pumpkins, November, fall

A few years ago when I did an informal count of all my real pumpkins in the yard and in the house I decided to add a few faux pumpkins to slow down the keeping up with Instagrammers. Sometimes it’s just too much.

At $6 for a real pumpkin and a shelf life of a few weeks, it was time to add a few faux pumpkins to the decor.

Like many of my decor decisions, I go all-in on a trend or decor like these decor staples. So over a few weeks of Michael coupons, I had an assortment of white and orange foam pumpkins.

Orange and white combinations can be a bit harsh so I painted a few pumpkins with my favorite creamy white paint.

I loved the softened look and it made the styrofoam pumpkins look warm and cozy.

Which is the perfect mood for November.

This year I stepped up my pumpkin game and painted a few pumpkins with this favorite blue.

I loved the blue pumpkins and decided to round up a few tired styrofoam pumpkins of various sizes and mix them up on the porch.

With one of my favorite color pairs, it just made sense to have blue and white pumpkins. I encourage you to pair a few of your own favorites. I shared this orange and blue pair on my porch on the gram.

blue and white pumpkins on the porch, blue and white pumpkins

And, what transpired was completely by accident and instant love!

Let me explain.

I intended to paint the pumpkins blue.

But, it turns out I paint the way I used to mow the yard on Saturdays- with random turns in no particular order. It drove my dad crazy and my attempts to explain my technique just left him flabbergasted.

Back to the blue and white pumpkins!

My plan was to paint the entire pumpkin but as I randomly painted between the ridges it left a trough that showed a bit of white. And then something really cool happened. With each brushstroke, it created a “striped” look between the pumpkins’ ridges. It resembled a vertical tie-dye.

how to make blue and white pumpkins

HOW TO MAKE NAVY AND WHITE PUMPKINS LIKE THESE

  • For the smaller pumpkins, I used a 1″ foam brush and for the larger pumpkins I used a 2-3″ foam brush.

  • I propped the pumpkins on a mason jar lid. It keeps the pumpkins from rolling off the counter.
  • I painted the pumpkins with Benjamin Moore’s Mascarpone. Let dry.
  • Use a foam brush and paint down every other “ridge” of the pumpkins. The foam brush “toggles” over the ridges which creates the white space on the pumpkin.

If it’s too stripey in places go back and paint additional ridges. If you look at my pumpkins there are more defined stripes and then sections where I added more blue paint.

I love this happy blue and white paint accident. This is exactly what November needs-a little spunk with blue and white pumpkins. I hope you all find joy and gratitude in the month of November.

HOW TO MAKE A GHOST CENTERPIECE

October 11, 2021

If you met me you would think I was crafty. I have a room filled with paint, glue, and glitter. But, the truth is I talk a big game when it comes to crafts. My truth? It is all smoke and mirrors. I cannot stand sticky fingers or glitter. Most of my craft projects go sideways because I lack patience. Until I made this ghost centerpiece. You guys I think my craft curse was lifted. I am so excited to share how to make a ghost centerpiece for the Halloween season!

I wanted an easy Halloween theme centerpiece for my kitchen table or beverage bar.

how-to-make-ghost-centerpiece-feature

STEPS TO MAKE A GHOST CENTERPIECE

The first thing you need to know about this ghost is it is a messy project. Make sure to cover the floor or maybe take this project to the garage or driveway (weather permitting).

And, I have almost zero photos because the steps are messy and you have to work fairly quickly to drape the fabric. I will add photos in the off-season. #wink

SUPPLIES NEEDED

  • Mod Podge
  • Basketball, volleyball or round styrofoam form
  • Wire hanger
  • Cheesecloth (this one is Made In the USA)
  • Tarp to catch the mess
  • Bucket to soak the cheesecloth + Mod Podge

STEPS

  1. Prep the area with a drop cloth or these

Mix the Mod Podge into a small bucket or large bowl

Assemble the ghost. This is a bit tricky with a basketball because it is heavy and it rolls.

I have used styrofoam and metal buckets like the ones I used earlier this season. You just want to create the shape of a ghost’s head.

I found this tissue ball on clearance and wrapped it with one of these to try and reuse it for a second ghost.

The process is a bit of trial and error so let me know what worked best for you!

I used a planter because it was a more stable surface than a ball.

Once you have an idea of how you want to drape your cheesecloth soak the cheesecloth in a mixture of water and Mod Podge. I have used glue too when I did not have enough of the Mod Podge.

This is the most critical step because you want to move quickly and drape the cheesecloth over the ball-shaped object. And, you want to position the cheesecloth around your entire object (planter) before it sets.

The more layers of cheesecloth the more substantial the ghost.

The wire hangers work if you want a wider ghost with a “wingspan.”

Draping the cheesecloth over a wire hanger worked great to manage the layers of cheesecloth.

The fun part arrives as the Mod Podge dries and the ghost takes shape. You have a little time to play with the drape of the cheesecloth before it sets.

Once dry, I used a marker to create the eyes, but felt and googly eyes would look great too!

I ended up setting him up with our beverage bar because he just looked so comfortable and it was out of the way of the day-to-day cooking and eating.

And he joined me for morning coffee!

HOW TO CREATE A THANKSGIVING TABLE SETTING IN MINUTES

October 5, 2021

Now, is the time to be thinking about Thanksgiving? Why? Because we are not in a manic panic mode yet. So let’s take advantage of the calm before the food and pumpkin frenzy.

HOW TO CREATE A THANKSGIVING TABLE SETTING

Hopefully, this leaves you with some ideas to plan your Thanksgiving table in advance. This is the year you get ahead of the holidays! Let’s do this!

You could be done before Halloween!

Since our kitchen remodel we decided to host Thanksgiving. It justifies the fancy oven that is on the brink more days than on bake. #wink

I want an easy, place setting that is simple, inexpensive, festive, and kid-friendly.

Thanksgiving-table-setting-everydayedits

HOW TO CREATE AN INEXPENSIVE PLACE SETTING

With our kitchen demo running over budget, I did not want to spend money to create 20 place settings. I created a place setting with texture, layers and color.

Adding one layer at a time turned an ordinary salad and dinner plate into a family-friendly and pretty seasonal place setting.

Layers

Thanksgiving-table-setting-everydayedits I began with brown craft paper for a table runner. It was an easy way to protect the table and give the table an earthy, organic feel.

The added bonus was kraft paper makes for easy cleanup.  I love chargers! Last fall, I purchased these galvanized chargers on a visit to see my sister in Knoxville.

I think galvanized chargers are a southern thing, but this Colorado girl loves them. Thanksgiving-place-setting-everydayedits My favorite set of plates are from World Market. They were a Pottery Barn knockoff find a few years ago. And, like my galvanized chargers, the dinner plates work year-round.

Thanksgiving-place-setting I used cotton gingham napkins I found online this summer. Usually, I think of gingham as a summer pattern, but I loved the contrast between the blue and orange pumpkins.

Sidenote: I am on a mission to buy these gingham cloth napkins in every color. They are much cheaper than the Pottery Barn gingham cloth napkins I bought with a gift card. I tucked a paper napkin as a safety net for spills and sticky fingers. And, I added a pumpkin to each plate with a note to pumpkin up. And, finally, I splurged on new pewter silverware after our kitchen remodel. The pewter finish has an understated vibe.

My sister said they looked tarnished! #snarkysisters   And of course every place setting needs a pumpkin!

Thanksgiving-place-setting With the place setting done, I turned my attention to the table. And, the limited real estate remaining on the table.

With my solid wood dining room table, I used this repurposed centerpiece to add some much needed greenery. For this place setting, I used my upcycled Anthropologie candle jars and added new votives.

The glass-painted pumpkins are oversized votives too. Thanksgiving-place-setting

I love to see how a few small and inexpensive changes can make such a pretty place setting. In a world of Instagram, I love the simplicity that fits my life and style.

Thanksgiving-place-setting Please check out the other bloggers and their Thanksgiving table settings. This was such

Oh and don’t forget to do this before Thanksgiving!

Sharing simple tips to prep the salt and pepper shakers simple before Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving will be here before you finish the Halloween candy. It will be here because Hallmark and Starbucks tell us it’s fall (in August). So now is the time to do all the things you will wish you had done before Thanksgiving.

Pin this under tips!

PREP THE SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS BEFORE THANKSGIVING

STEPS TO PREP SALT +PEPPER SHAKERS

Gather all of your salt and pepper shakers and your salt and pepper.

Next, here is a tip I tried and it worked well. Place a damp paper towel on the counter and then set out your salt and pepper shakers. The damp paper towel holds the salt and pepper

HOW TO LOAD THE SALT AND PEPPER SHAKERS

Next, load those petite seasoning vessels with salt and pepper. Now the debate starts here. Yes even salt and pepper shakers are a hot topice. The question is do we still want to use the two hole shaker for the pepper or is it better to use the two hole shaker with salt?

I found my pour was better when I raised the pepper above the mouth of the shaker. I mean it’s still messy, but the paper towel gives you a fighting chance.

You will feel great knowing it’s done because no one wants to pause while prepping the Thanksgiving table and fill (spill) salt and pepper over every kitchen surface.

Sidenote: Who decided shakers require microscopic holes the size of a needle.

do-this-before-Thanksgiving

I know what some of you are thinking. There is plenty of time to do Thanksgiving and holiday prep details. Right?

do-this-before-Thanksgiving

But, right now between Hallmark’s Autumn Leaves and White Christmas go ahead and haul out the salt and pepper shakers and get ‘er done before Thanksgiving.

What are some other time-saving tips you like to do now before the calendar says it’s two more sleeps until Thanksgiving?

Please share in the comments!

Here’s another weekly hack (tip) to start your Mondays!

In the meantime, stock up on the salt and pepper. Who knew ground pepper was so pricey.

THE WEEKEND EDIT AUGUST-EVE + AN ONION QUESTION

July 31, 2021

I have a first-world problem in the form of a question. It has been driving me a little crazy this week. I know, I know… this is where my mind goes when I  have a buyer-free week. #realtorlife

Where do you store your onions in your kitchen? Do you store them on the counter, drawer or cabinet? Oh my!

And in other random thoughts do you remember last January when you told yourself you were going to be on top of the holidays?

Well, seven months later and the only thing I organized was this closet.

I blame my lack of organizing for the holidays on a heavy dose of Netflix and my new favorite-the Peacock network.

If you follow me on Instagram you might remember Elliott loves the Acorn network.

Are any of you watching Virgin River? It makes me think of pumpkins with the skylines and sunsets. Who is your favorite character? I definitely have a least favorite.

Oh, and in case you like to find errors in popular shows read these misses on this popular Netflix show. It’s like the Starbucks cup in Game of Thrones (just a smaller audience).

1. I am enjoying this show too.

1.5 Before I forget make sure you order these for your furnace. Pull out your current filter to confirm the correct size. Also if you have moved into a new home or condo make sure and replace them. #madeinusa

2. I am obsessed with painting plywood floors since reading this project.

Our carpet has seen better days with two Bernese Mountain dogs. My husband and I debate between hardwood and carpet in the bedrooms.

I thought pulling up the carpet and painting the plywood might encourage my husband to move up the decision deadline. What could go wrong?

2.5 Have you seen my new Made in the USA Mondays Series on Youtube? If you have a favorite USA brand please email me to include in future posts.

3. When can we start to bake pumpkin recipes? Is it too early to bake this pumpkin cake?

4. This is the only side dish recipe you need for Thanksgiving.

4.2I started adding this to my morning coffee.

5. I shared these yummy strawberry bars.

6. Do you dress up your dogs for Halloween? Our daughter entered Elliott and Chloe into an office pet contest last year and Elliott came in third for his wheels on the bus impression. Yes, we had snow in October. This was not the submitted photo because I didn’t want to hurt Chloe’s feelings.

Thanks for stopping by today. Before you go would you subscribe to my Youtube Channel. I just shared my latest Made in USA Monday video here.

I turned off the comments until I perfect where to stare into the camera ;0)
